Stage 4 History

To consolidate their understanding of the feudal system introduced to Medieval England by William the Conqueror in the 11th Century, Mrs Bright’s 8B class participated in a role play that required some students to act as peasants producing food (lollies), while others were knights, nobles, or clergy, who all benefitted from the collective labour of the peasants. We even had our very own King William, complete with a crown, who collected taxes from everyone below him.

The class also participated in a play about life in a Medieval manor village, with Ivy N playing a very convincing Lord who was exploiting the labour of the peasants who worked his land. Again, this activity assisted students to understand social hierarchy during this time, as well as the roles and responsibilities of different groups in Medieval society.

Stage 5 History

This Term, Year 10 History students have studied Australians at War: World War II. This has required them to examine the background to the war, why Australia became involved and where we fought, and some of the battles Australians were involved in, such as the Battle of Britain, the Siege of Tobruk, El Alamein, the Fall of Singapore, the attack on Australia, and the New Guinea campaign. To gain a better understanding of the German army’s tactic of Blitzkrieg, Mrs Bright’s class had to carry out a coordinated (planes, tanks and infantry) attack on Mr Debono’s students, who were pretending to be French soldiers defending the main quad and front entrance. Unfortunately, the defenders were completely overwhelmed by the speed and strength of the attack, which led to the successful capture of ‘Paris’.

Stage 5 International Studies

Year 10 International Studies have been hard at work this term already studying the concept of culture, in all of its forms. We’ve also been celebrating cultural events as they’ve occured. On Tuesday the 17th February, the class learned about and celebrated Lunar New Year. They students received a traditional red envelope with a treat inside and practiced saying the New Year blessing.

International Studies also teamed up with Year 12 Society & Culture to celebrate Holi, the Indian Festival of Colour to celebrate the changing of the seasons and goods triumph over evil. The students had a wonderful time showering each other in coloured powder to celebrate. All students were extremely well behaved and respectful throughout the event.
