Hurling

On Wednesday 18th March, the Year 2 students were lucky enough to have a visit from Ruairi’s Dad, Paul. During our PE lesson, Paul taught us all about the Irish sport, hurling.

We learnt some very interesting facts about the sports history and the students were fascinated to discover that the sport was the oldest field game in the world dating back to over 3,000 years.

Paul brought along some hurleys (sticks) and sliotars (balls) for us to see and explained the positions on the field and how to handle and move the sliotar. We even got to watch a video of Paul's Uncle playing a game of hurling for his team in Ireland!

Once we headed out to the oval, Paul demonstrated how to move the sliotar around and how to hit it. The students were super impressed by how far he could hit and how fast he could run!

Next it was the students turn. Learning how to hold the hurley, each student had a go at flicking the sliotar up and also hitting it off the ground. We were all very impressed at how well we could do this on our first ever attempt at this new and exciting sport.

We would like to thank Paul for his time and effort and also for sharing his expertise with us all. We had a brilliant session, and we all agreed that it was fabulous to try something new!
