Year Three

Hi everyone,

This term in Science, we have been learning all about rocks and minerals. We have turned into junior geologists! So, what main types of rocks and minerals did we learn about?

We have learnt that there are three types of rocks. Igneous (which are made from volcano lava), sedimentary (which are made from layers of sediment compressed together) and metamorphic (rocks that change under pressure… basically rocks that have glow-ups).

The main minerals we learnt about were quartz, copper and talc.

So what else did we do? We got sent on a rock hunt! We hunted for rocks around our houses and local areas. Then, we brought them to school to investigate. We were super lucky that Miss Karen also lent us her family's EXTENSIVE rock collection from all around Australia.

We looked very closely at the different rocks and minerals and investigated their observable properties. We looked at their hardness, colour, shape and lustre. Do you know what lustre is? Lustre is a fancy scientific word for how shiny something is.

We learnt about the different uses of different minerals as well as how First Nations people use flaked and grinding stones. We also collected lots of natural materials along with the rocks to make pictures.

Who knew there was so much to know about something so unassuming. Next time you’re out and about on a family walk, look a little closer at the rocks underneath your feet. You might be amazed by what you’ll find!
