Environmental Council progress continues

"A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit."

If there was one thing constant through each generation, it's that nature will always be a fundamental part of life; ranging from giving us the oxygen required to let us live or from a tree giving us the comfort of shade on a hot summer day.

The council prides itself on the idea that in the future, McCarthy will have the wildlife to accompany the vast native plants in the process of growing. While the efforts conducted by the council may not necessarily have an immediate effect, the hope is that future generations of students will be able to enjoy the shade that we once didn’t have.

For this year, the Environmental Council is actively involved in establishing a green boundary around the school. Currently, there are a number of native plants in the nursery ready for planting. The volunteers are currently planting more seeds for germination, such as for wattles, hop bushes and kurrajongs.

The council has seen a significant growth in members and can now effectively assign jobs between each member to improve the efficiency of tasks. We successfully filled up a majority of our recycling bins every week, with a steady increase in the usage of the recycling bins with more and more bottles ending up recycled every week thanks to schoolwide efforts. On average, two of the blue 240L wheelie bins are filled. The aim is to fill three bins a week. St Vincent de Paul collect these bins and use the money raised to support locally based community projects.

The paper recycling is running extremely well, with four of the yellow wheelie bins filled every week from the paper recycling collected from the classrooms.

We would also like to thank our junior recycling teams for dedicating their class time to assist Mr Nichols in collecting recycling, as well as giving a shoutout to our seniors for being consistently involved in seed sorting.

As Term 1 comes to a close, we ask students to continue the usage of the recycling bins and participate in the various roles required for the smooth running of the council. Your efforts have and will always be greatly appreciated.

Our meeting will be at Lab 1 every Thursday second break. We’re looking forward to seeing old and new faces. Moreover, Term 2 will also be a great time to join the council for Year 11 seeking an executive role. This opportunity will look exceptional on your university application and resume.

Thank you everyone for your interest and efforts in helping the council grow. If you have any questions, feel free to email snichols@arm.catholic.edu.au.
