The Benefits of 15 Minutes of Reading a Day

In library lessons, I see every day how even 15 minutes of reading can help students slow down, focus, and engage with a book. Just 15 minutes of reading a day - whether it’s a novel, graphic novel, nonfiction book, or a favourite series - quietly builds the foundations of strong literacy.

Much of a child’s vocabulary growth occurs not through direct teaching but by encountering words in context while reading. Regular reading strengthens comprehension, develops language skills, and builds background knowledge that supports learning across all subjects.

The long-term impact is significant. Research shows that students who read for 15 minutes or more each day experience far greater exposure to language than those who rarely read. Between Prep and Grade 2 alone, daily readers encounter over 200,000 additional words - almost five times as many as children who read very little. By the end of secondary school, this gap can grow to millions of words, influencing confidence, engagement, and academic success.

In the school library, part of my role is helping students balance comfort reads with new and exciting titles that stretch their thinking. When students are encouraged to explore widely while still choosing books that match their interests, they are more likely to develop lasting reading habits.

Parents also play a powerful role. Research shows that children benefit academically when reading is modelled and encouraged at home, leading to improved vocabulary, comprehension, and long-term learning outcomes. Simple routines - such as setting aside 15–20 minutes of reading each evening, talking about books, or reading alongside your child - can make a meaningful difference.
