Physical Education

Prep

Our Prep students practised correct techniques for underarm and overarm throwing, as well as rolling and catching. Students developed their bouncing and passing skills both independently and with a partner. In addition, they improved their footwork and coordination by performing skills such as galloping, hopping, skipping, side stepping, and safely jogging backwards. Throughout the term, students applied these skills in a range of games, helping to build confidence, teamwork, and overall physical ability.

Level 1 – 2

The Level 1 – 2 students have been further consolidating their fundamental skills for movement. This has included running, leaping, side stepping, skipping and jogging backwards.

They have practised underarm rolling and throwing which are important basic object-control skills

Learning these helps children:

  • Control and direct objects toward a target
  • Build the foundation for sports such as bowling, cricket, softball, and basketball passes

One of the students favourite warm up games, ultimate dodgeball also relies on accurately throwing to tag players.

Students use the keywords of step, swing, throw to assist with the correct technique for underarm throwing. They have focused on stepping with the opposing leg and using a straight throwing arm and facing the ball to their target or partner. Students use the terms step, bend, roll for underarm rolling, ensuring they face their partner or target and bend from the hips to ensure the ball stays on the ground while rolling.

Harmony Week Activities

For Harmony Week students learnt about the history of some of the modern games/sports played today. One of these was a tagging game from Pakistan called ‘Oonch Neech’, which is a game similar to 'off ground tiggy'. They also learnt how to roll a hula hoop which was an activity performed by Egyptian, Greek and Roman children dating as far back as 500BC. The students played a modified game of Bocce, which dates back as far as 9000BC to ancient Turkey and was also played by the ancient Romans and Greeks. The final activity practised was skipping (jump rope), which also dates back thousands of years and originated in Egypt, China and Greece using rope or vines.

Level 3- 4

Level 3-4 students have conducted peer assessments while performing a range of fundamental skills required in many popular sports including, skipping, chest passing, kicking a drop punt for A.F.L., passing a soccer ball, underarm and overarm throwing and catching, vertical jumps, star jumps and basketball dribbling. They have analysed their peer’s skills and provided feedback to assist them in developing the correct technique for that particular skill. Improved technique is essential for greater accuracy as well as reducing the risk of injury.

Level 4 students have completed their first recorded Beep Test, which will assist them in tracking their aerobic endurance throughout their primary school years. Students are reminded to focus on their own results with an emphasis on improving with each Beep Test performed.

Level 5 and 6

Students in Level 5 and 6 have focused on practising their interschool sports, including basketball, softball, rounders and cricket. Many of the skills developed in the junior years such as throwing and catching are essential for the interschools sportds performed in Years 5 and 6. Gaining confidence in these basic skills and greater awareness of the rules, ensures students enter the interschool sport days in a more positive and confident manner.

Level 5 and 6 students have also performed the Beep Test and compared their results to previous results recorded. An honourable mention must go to Shayan from 6R who set a new school record for the Beep Test with a score of 11.6. This was a significant improvement on the old mark set back in 2018 of 11.2. Great work Shayan!

All Levels are now preparing for the House Cross Country event to be held on Tuesday, May 12th. Further information regarding the event will be available early in Term 2.
