Year 6 Maths - Integers
In Year 6, we have been learning about integers. Integers are positive and negative whole numbers, including zero. We discovered that numbers to the right of zero are positive, numbers to the left of zero are negative, and zero is neither positive nor negative. We began by recognising integers in everyday contexts such as temperatures, bank accounts and sea levels. Using number lines, we practised placing integers and exploring how they relate to real-life situations.
To build our understanding, we played a variety of games. These games helped us practise comparing, adding, and subtracting positive and negative numbers in a fun and interactive way.
We also applied integers to financial contexts. For example, we learned that deposits are positive integers (+$100) and withdrawals are negative integers (-$50). We tracked balances by writing deposits and withdrawals as integers, and then calculated the totals. This showed us how integers are useful in everyday life, especially when managing money.
Through these activities, we learnt how to recognise, describe, and use integers in real-life and financial situations. We enjoyed challenging each other with games while also learning important life skills about money and problem-solving.
