Year 1 English

Year 1 English

Year 1 students have been very busy and engaged in their learning this term. Each morning begins with the Sound Waves chant, which helps students build confidence and excitement about learning new sounds (phonemes). Students have been unpacking a new phoneme each week, exploring the different ways the sound can be represented in words and identifying words that include the focus sound. Through activities such as word building, reading and writing practice, they are strengthening their phonics knowledge and early literacy skills.

In English, students have been practising Fluency Pairs, where they read with a partner and focus on reading smoothly at a steady pace—not too fast and not too slow. They also provide each other with feedback to help improve their fluency.

During writing lessons, students have been learning about how to write an information text about the seasons in Australia and have enjoyed reading a variety of Aesop’s fables, where they discuss and identify the moral of each story.

Students have been learning to include a subject and a verb when writing simple sentences, along with correct punctuation. They have also been practising how to expand their sentences by adding adjectives and prepositional words to make their writing more detailed and interesting.

It has been a positive and productive start to the year in Year 1. Well done!
