The Year 11 Camp was held in Melbourne from the 25th to the 27th of June. Students travelled down to Melbourne by train and after checking into their accommodation they commenced their first activities of the camp.
Students participated in a ‘city scramble’, using Melbourne’s public transport network to visit several landmarks across the city. After this, the students visited the Mary MacKillop Heritage Centre. Students were taken on a walking tour of several locations of importance to Mary. They also had time to look inside the museum in the centre and to pause for reflection in the Chapel.
On Tuesday evening students visited the Melbourne Skydeck. Here they experienced the Voyager Theatre, a virtual reality experience that takes the participant on an immersive journey through Melbourne. Students also visited the observation deck where they were able to enjoy 360° views of the city.
On Day two students headed out to the Melbourne Holocaust Museum. They participated in the ‘In Touch With Memory’ program which allowed them to examine various artefacts from the Holocaust and explore the lives of Melbourne-based Holocaust survivors. The students were treated to a matinee performance of 'Wicked the Musical' at the Regent Theatre.
That night students attended the State of Origin game at the MCG. This was a very new and different experience for many students which they thoroughly enjoyed.
On the final day of camp students headed to Melbourne Zoo. Biology students took part in a guided workshop relevant to their VCE coursework while other students enjoyed wandering around the different exhibits. Following the zoo visit, students were given a volunteer-led tour of the Shrine of Remembrance which was of great interest to them.
To finish up, students visited Australian Catholic University’s Melbourne Campus. Here they were given a tour of many of the facilities on offer as well as a presentation about ACU’s different offerings.
Students should be proud of the way they conducted themselves throughout the camp. Thank you to Mr Lane, Mrs Alderuccio, Mrs Smith, Mr Whiting, Mrs Cordingley and Mrs Demaria for attending with the students.
