YEAR 8 HUMANITIES EXCURSION - YUNG BALUG MUSEUM

MISS JESSICA CURTIS - HUMANITIES TEACHER

This week, the Year 8 Humanities classes travelled to Boort to visit the Yung Balug Museum which is a keeping place for local Indigenous artefacts. The museum is run by Paul and Cathie Haw and they continue to build the collection as they receive donations from farmers in the region.

Students participated in three sessions. One session had students entering the museum where they were able to view, pick up and use some artefacts. Paul shared a lot of information in this session about the artefacts and images on the walls. Another session was led by Cathie and had students exploring the property, looking at different varieties of wattle, a burial site where remains have been returned to country and the lunette hill that has formed on the east side of the lake. After lunch, the final session allowed us the opportunity to travel around the lake to view scar trees and a cooking mound.

We want to thank Paul and Cathie for sharing all of their knowledge with us and providing the students with wattle seed scones to try. Thank you to Luke Crow, Henry Thompson, Elia Ware, Kylie Andrews and Yvonne Kelley who attended with the students.
