  • Helped with activities such as bingo, quizzes, painting, footy tipping etc
  • Collected residents in wheelchairs from rooms to go to places like lunch and activities
  • Shadowed nurses
  • Learnt how they showered residents who needed help
  • Learnt how they used a lifter to move residents from bed to wheelchair
  • observed nurses feeding residents
  • Helped make beds

What did you like about the work placement?

I enjoyed helping a lady play bingo, talking to the residents each morning, and making connections with them.

What things were challenging?

Sometimes it was challenging to know what to talk to with the residents.

It was a bit confronting at times watching the nurses.

Is there a chance that it may influence your future plans?

Yes, I would definitely look into this further as a possible future career.

NAME: Hannalee Bacon

Where did you complete your placement?

I completed my placement on the 11th to the 14th of June at Cohuna Consolidated School.

What roles did you undertake there?

At the primary school I was able to help all the kids when they needed it and to learn how all different year levels worked. Some of these tasks were reading, P.E,  I.C.T, Maths, writing speeches, playing with the kids and singing.

What did you like about the work placement?

I liked that I was able to have one-on-one time with the kids to get to know them and how they learn. I enjoyed getting to help some of the kids with their reading.

What things were challenging?

Things that were challenging to me were trying to remember some of the student's names, and that whole bunch of kids wanted to hang out with me but wanted to play different games.

Is there a chance that it may influence your future plans?

It has, I am trying to work out if I'd like to work in childcare or as a teacher's aide.
