WHAT ARE DEEPFAKES? A PARENT GUIDE

MRS MANDY MCCALLUM - DIRECTOR OF WELLBEING

Given the current issues some schools are facing, it is crucial for our school community to understand the impact that deep fakes can have on our students. Students may be targeted by classmates or online bullies who create fake videos to embarrass or harass them. Teachers and staff are not immune either, as they can become victims of fake content aimed at damaging their reputations. The spread of deepfakes in a school environment can lead to a toxic atmosphere, disrupting learning and causing significant emotional distress.

Understanding Deepfakes: Deepfakes are highly realistic but fake digital photos, videos, or sound files of real people. They use advanced artificial intelligence to make it look like someone is doing or saying something they never did or said.

Risks and Dangers: Deepfakes can cause significant harm. They have been used to create fake news, false pornographic videos, and hoaxes, often targeting celebrities and politicians. They can also be used for identity theft, extortion, and harassment, leading to financial loss, reputational damage, and emotional distress for the victims.

Impact on School Children: School children are especially vulnerable to deepfakes. They might be targeted by classmates or online bullies who create fake videos to embarrass or harass them. This can lead to severe emotional distress, humiliation, and damage to their social and academic lives. The spread of such deepfakes can lead to cyberbullying, affecting a child's self-esteem and mental health. Additionally, students could be blackmailed when deepfake images or videos of them are posted online, with threats to share the fake content publicly unless they comply with the blackmailer’s demands. This can cause intense fear and anxiety.

The Role of Parents: This issue isn't limited to schools; it extends to the home and online environments. Parents play a crucial role in protecting their children. Now is the time to have open and honest conversations with your children about ethical and respectful behavior online. Your involvement is essential to prevent your child or someone they know from becoming a victim of deepfakes.
