School Olympics

All Saints’ School Olympics

I think we can safely say that the All Saints' Olympic Games contained enough grandeur, surprise defeats and courageous victories to rival the Paris Olympics!!

Although we didn’t have a river to perform our Opening Ceremony on we did have the backdrop of the hills of Tumbarumba as the torch made its way from Athens around our school oval and into the stadium to rapturous applause. Our athletes entered the arena, so proud to be carrying their flags for their countries.

Shortly after the Welcome to Country our athletes began competition with the arduous marathon kicking off the event calendar. The streets of Tumbarumba cleared as our athletes pounded the grassy verges surrounding the venue. All marathon competitors scored points for their country with every lap they completed. This was the first time in history that the marathon has been a team event. A new world record of 20 minutes for the marathon was recorded, and every competitor stopped running at that point as there was no more time left in the schedule.

The event schedule was very busy with athletes competing in the vortex throw, ten-pin bowling, tower building, chain making, ping pong throw, balloon volleyball and other team challenges.

By the end of the day, the medal tally was very high. Some competitors went home with strings of medals around their necks. For some competitors, this will be the last All Saints Olympics that they will compete in. We wish them well in their retirement, others are just starting out and we will no doubt see them back here in four years, bigger, stronger and even more competitive.

What a day of competition, country relations have been strengthened and hearts have been expanded. I hope everyone has a safe journey back to their country of origin.
