Inquiry

Science   I   Technology   I   Humanities    I    General Capabilities

Our Inquiry question will involve critical and creative thinking in the area of Science when we ask ‘What are materials and how can we affect them?’. Our curious scientists will connect with physical materials, they will communicate the purpose and efficacy of different materials and create their own solutions and artefacts based on real life problems. They will be investigating questions such as:

  • What are different materials? What properties do they have?
  • How can we describe, compare and sort different materials? How can we describe these properties?
  • What are the purposes and benefits of certain materials for particular uses? Why are some materials more suitable than others? How can we choose the most suitable materials to use for a particular purpose?
  • How can we change and combine materials for different purposes? What physical actions can we apply?
  • What can we create by changing and combining different materials?
  • How can we change, remake, or recycle some materials into new products? Why is this important?

In addition to classroom experiences, students will be given hands-on opportunities to investigate these questions by conducting multiple scientific experiments. They will combine materials and seek to understand the chemical changes occurring whilst recording their predictions, understandings and findings.
