French Poem Recitation Finalists

We are thrilled to celebrate the exceptional participation of Atharv Palsodkar (Year 8), Toby Riches and Grace Shackleton (Year 9), Jinning Huang and Kereen He (Year 10), in the 2024 edition of the French Poem Recitation Finals. The grand final was held on Saturday 15 June at the Alliance Française premises in Nedlands.

The students were encouraged to delve into the meaning, themes, and emotions of the poems selected by Alliance Française, allowing them to develop critical thinking and interpretive skills. They dedicated significant time and effort to memorising and infusing the words with emotions.

Learning and reciting poetry is a cherished cultural practice in France to introduce French students to a rich repertoire of classical and contemporary literary works. It plays a vital role in the development of language skills, cultural appreciation, and personal expression.

Reciting a poem in front of a jury is no small feat. Overcoming nerves and delivering a performance that captures the essence of the poem requires both courage and skill. The students’ participation in the finals highlights not only their individual achievements but also their passion for the French language.

Jinning reflected on the activity and said "I found the experience really rewarding because participating in the French poem competition allowed me to apply my prior knowledge of French to understand the poem's meaning while improving my vocabulary and pronunciation and understand the linguistic differences between English and French. Engaging with the allocated poem, Chanson de la Seine, also helped me to foster a greater appreciation and understanding of French culture, because it reflected the significance of the Seine River, a key part of French heritage."

Bravo to Atharv, Toby, Grace, Jinning and Kereen for their outstanding accomplishment!

Taryn and Raphie's Artistic Brilliance at St George's Awards

Visual Arts ATAR students Taryn Lee (Year 12) and Raphie Benjamin (Year 11) have had their artworks selected into the prestigious 21st annual St George’s Cathedral Art awards.

The concept behind Raphie’s mixed media leather jacket ‘Faith Worn’ lies in the tangible history of the jacket itself.

"Once belonging to my mother, the jacket is heavy with memories of her travels in Italy 20 years ago. Antique lace, old Bible pages, velvet, beads and intricate crucifixes, symbolise her spiritual conviction. Faith Worn pays homage to my mother's faith, but also my interpretation of the Church - both beautiful, but sometimes ugly," explained Raphie.

Raphie received the Mixed Media and Textiles award for her piece.

Taryn’s oil painting Tunnel Vision’ is a response about their struggles with a recent OCD diagnosis.

"Scouring the internet for reassurance is a common compulsive habit that people with OCD undertake to give themselves relief. The use of a fisheye perspective symbolises the distortion of thoughts caused by OCD, illustrating how the disorder twists perceptions," said Taryn.

The exhibition is open daily from Saturday 13 July to Sunday 21 July, from 10.00am – 4.00pm at 38 St George’s Terrace. Entrance by gold coin donation.

Congratulations Taryn and Raphie!
