100 Days of Prep

What an amazing day we had last Friday with our 100 Days of Prep celebrations. It’s a very special milestone and part of the reasoning behind it was explained by Ms Hill last week in the newsletter…

‘Each day, for the past 100 days the Prep teachers have introduced the next number in our counting sequence, representing it in different ways and modelling it using Tens Frames. This helps the children develop an understanding of our Base 10 number system, and an understanding of place value.’

The whole school cheered the prep children as they paraded into the hall. We watched as the variety of dressed up prep children and teachers walked along the runway. We listened to our special 100 year old guest, Sr Marie Therese and were captivated when we heard stories of her life as a teacher at St Finbar’s and a Principal at five other schools. She also mentioned how she knew Fr John Ashe who was a principal of St Finbar’s and we now have a playground named after him. Sr Marie pleased some of the audience when she mentioned she followed Collingwood in the AFL.

After our special assembly the Prep, Yr 1 & 2 children participated in a maths incursion called, The Maths Show, presented by Louisa from Felstead Education. They learnt some history of Mathematics and heard about some famous Mathematicians.

While the prep classes continued after lunch with some amazing activities related to numbers and in particular the number 100, the Year 3/4 and 5/6 classes participated in their own maths incursion, The Amazing Maths Race. This included the children working in groups of 3 or 4 and moving around the school to locations named as countries and had to solve some challenging maths tasks so as to get back to home base.

The day finished for the Prep classes when they joined together for a celebratory party. They loved eating all the amazing creations and food related to 100. Thank you to all the Prep parents who contributed to this and we are hoping there were no repercussions related to the amount of food consumed by such small tummies.

Thanks also to the amazing Prep team of teachers and support staff, Mrs Byrne, Mrs Pickering, Andrea, Sally and Liesl, who made this day such a memorable one.
