Learn what opportunities our students have been taking on
Last week Year 10 and Year 12 students participated in activities provided by the Deakin Equity and Access Program. Year 10 students attended a session delivered by past student, Felicity Mackley, that focused on what it was like to attend university. Felicity completed Year 12 in 2023 and is now studying a Bachelor of Psychology at Deakin, Waurn Ponds campus. Year 12 students attended a session delivered by past student Will Brennan which focused on applying for scholarships and special consideration.
Recently, Year 7 students dived into the world of solutions and explored how a solute dissolves in a solvent to form a homogenous mixture. They learned how particles become invisible and blend seamlessly into a solvent and explored how substances interact on a microscopic level.
Year 11 Chemistry students completed a prac to test the energy content in different foods. Students burnt a sample of a foodstuff of known mass, heating a known volume of water. From the measured temperature change, students calculate the energy transferred to the water, and hence estimate the energy present per unit mass of food.
Last week, a group of Year 10 students attended the Deakin University Health Discovery Day, held at the Horsham Town Hall. Students participated in mini workshops that focused on different careers in the health sector, including nursing, occupational therapy, radiology, nutrition and exercise science. Deakin University students from the Horsham area who are now studying at Deakin Geelong and Warrnambool, engaged with our students to discuss their journeys pathways, along with health professionals from the local hospital. All our students reported that the program was very informative and engaging, and that they learnt more about the health sector. Thank you to Deakin Equity and Access Program who hosted these workshops for the students!
Congratulations to the students who participated in Friday night's Presentation Ball. The annual event is a wonderful night to celebrate the achievements and aspirations of our students. In the months leading up to the night, participants dedicate time to learn the basics of ballroom dance and work to perfect a number of dances. For some students, this occasion is out of their comfort zone, but it is great to see their confidence grow and a special bond form across the cohort.
Thank you to friends, family and College community members who joined us in the Heritage Hall to celebrate the evening.
Thank you to everyone involved in putting on such a special event, including parents, staff and dance trainers, Maree T and James M, whose patience and dedication in teaching the students is always very appreciated.
This week a number of our students were able to participate in the Goolum Goolum Pathways Expo. This was a great opportunity for the students to be able to ask questions and gather information that will support them in future career decisions and pathways. Colby McDonald, St Brigid's College Aboriginal Liaison Officer, spoke on a panel where she shared her own career journey so far. Thank you to Goolum Goolum for providing this valuable opportunity for our students.
