A Spotlight on Learning in the MLC on Springvale Campus
The Middle Learning Centre (MLC) has dived straight into Term 3 with great enthusiasm and engagement with all learning activities!
In Reading, our MLC students have been focusing on how to understand information directly stated in the text by skimming and scanning for specific details like dates, names, and keywords. They have used text features such as headings, sub-headings, pictures, diagrams, captions, and bold words to efficiently locate relevant information. In Writing, students have been learning to write clear and varied sentences, such as simple and compound sentences, by identifying and using different parts of speech, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. They have also focused on using correct punctuation and letter formation.
In Mathematics, students have been learning to tell the time by focusing on telling the time to the hour, half hour, quarter past and quarter to the hour. They have been using correct vocabulary to describe these times and explain the duration a half hour represents. Additionally, they are also working on telling the time to 5-minute and 1-minute intervals by identifying minute markings on a clock.
In Projects, students have been learning to investigate the history and culture of First Nations People as part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations. They explored the idea of connection with Country and community, discussed the diverse cultures and traditions of First Nations People and described the importance of storytelling for First Nations People and other cultures.
In Social and Emotional Learning, students have been learning to identify causes of stress and developing an understanding of what stress is. Students were able to recognise stressors at school and home, identify strategies to manage stress, and create self-calming / coping mechanisms.
Additionally, some very enthusiastic and helpful Year 4 students have been reading to students at one of our local Kindergartens; sharing stories and fostering a love for reading through engaging and interactive sessions. What an amazing start to the Term!
