Welcome back to Term Three!
I hope everyone enjoyed a well-deserved break and are ready to start an exciting new term. Last week we were delighted to begin the term with a focus on celebrating and honouring the rich history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through our NAIDOC Week activities.
As part of NAIDOC Week our MLC students learnt how to make Johnny cakes in their Kitchen sessions. Some of the students had already been lucky enough to have tasted Johnny cakes when Miss McKayla made them for Breakfast Club. During kitchen they were able to learn the recipe and work through the method to make their own. Whilst they enjoyed getting their hands into the dough, they all agreed that eating them was their favourite part of the session.
At Springvale Rise Primary we are very lucky to have a variety of picture books, novels and information texts which celebrate First Nation culture.
During NAIDOC week students across the school were encouraged to read many of these books. Teachers also used the texts to plan literacy sessions and other learning activities across all grade levels. This gave students the opportunity to learn from and appreciate the diverse stories and perspectives of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
One of the highlights of our NAIDOC Week celebrations was the special assembly we held on Friday. During the assembly students from across the school were able to share examples of the work they had been doing in class over the week. Students from the JLC spoke about how they had been using their senses to connect to the land.
Our senior students showcased their creativity and their literacy skills by sharing the poems they had written which were inspired by First Nations themes. Some students received special NAIDOC week prizes for their efforts. However, they weren’t the only ones to leave school that day with a special gift, every student received either a NAIDOC week ball or a pencil case to help them celebrate this important event.
As we move forward into Term 3, I’m looking forward to another fantastic term filled with fun, learning and growth!
