Principal's Report

Stephen O'Shannessy

I am pleased to announce the change of name to the existing Specialist Building and former convent has been approved. The Nano Nagle Centre will be officially opened on September 4th, and we would love for you to be a part of this historic day.  As you may be aware, St Mary's has a rich history deeply intertwined with the Presentation Sisters, who lived in our existing convent building and ran the school from 1907 to 1974. Our school places great importance on the life and legacy of Nano Nagle, the founder of the Presentation Sisters, using her life of service as an exemplar of how to live out the values of the Gospel. This change in name not only honours Nano's legacy but aligns with the current ethos of our school. The convent building is currently being used for a variety of purposes, serving our community through Playgroup and Parish gatherings, among other activities. Join us on September 4th for the official blessing conducted by Bishop Shane Mackinlay and the unveiling of the plaque by Ms Martha Haylett MP.

Next week, we celebrate three of our students who will continue their Sacramental journey at St Mary's Parish. Lucy, Kiarah and Corrado have been preparing for their First Reconciliation under the guidance of Fr. Stephen. Through thoughtful lessons and discussions, they are learning the importance of forgiveness and self-reflection. This milestone marks a significant step in their spiritual journey, and we are incredibly proud of their commitment and transition. We look forward to celebrating this special moment with them and their families.

As we prepare for this Friday’s Trivia Night, we are reminded of the importance of coming together to celebrate our school community. Events like these are more than just evenings of entertainment. Our Trivia Night is a chance for parents, community members and staff to connect outside the usual routines, share laughter, and create lasting memories. These moments of togetherness are essential in fostering a sense of belonging and unity among us all. As we come together this Friday, let’s cherish the opportunity to celebrate what makes our school a vibrant, inclusive community we are so proud to be a part of.

As a part of the contract of Employment, each Principal of a Catholic school in the Diocese of Sandhurst is required to undertake an appraisal.  As Principal at St Mary's, I will have my Formative Appraisal next week. The purpose of an appraisal is to provide me with feedback about my leadership of the school.  The appraisal will explore specific areas of school life and provide me with important details so that I can continue to grow as a leader. At the end of the appraisal process, I will receive a detailed report about the information gathered from the process and this will support me in shaping my professional goals and practice for the future.

I would like to extend my thanks to all of you who took the time to provide input on the principal appraisal. Your feedback is invaluable to the school and is crucial in our ongoing efforts to enhance our leadership and overall environment. I  appreciate your commitment to our school community and your willingness to share your thoughts. This collaboration between parents and the school is vital to our success and growth of the school and my own personal growth.

Thank you once again for your support and engagement.
