Level 1 & 2 Wonga Weekly

Week 4, Term 3

In Week 4 we are learning about...

📚 LITERACY

In Reading, we will be looking at the mentor text, 'Olympig' written by Victoria Jamieson and unpacking vocabulary related to the character traits presented throughout the text, comparing inside and outside traits that the character displays.

In Writing, we will continue to write short narratives. Students will be encouraged to write about the traits that characters can show and emotions they feel when they are solving problems.

In Phonics, we will continue our focus on saying and hearing sounds in words to assist us with spelling. We continue to build our 'UFLI' phonics program in our classrooms. Gr1 students will focus on 'Long Vowels' when vowels say their name, not their sound. Gr2 students will focus on adding suffixes, specifically adding 'ed' to words.

What you can do at home

Encourage your child to read every night. Sometimes your child may bring home a book that they have read before. This is fine and we recommend that your child rereads books to help develop fluency and prosody (rhythm and intonation in language).

🎲 NUMERACY

We will continue with our focus on multiplication and division. We will use the language 'grouping' and 'sharing' to help us model the skills involved. We will make 'even groups' and 'share fairly' when solving problems. We will consider how grouping can also be presented as repeated addition and that groups can also be presented as an array.

For the next few weeks we will also complete tasks related to measurement; length, capacity, mass, volume and area.

What you can do at home:

When watching the Olympic coverage over the next few weeks, spend some time  discussing the results from different events. You will be able to chat about many different mathematical concepts; time, length, speed, ordinal numbers, just to name a few! Have a look at the medal tally too, so much maths involved in this data and so exciting to watch the action too!

🌄 CBL - Respect

This week will be considering the following question; How do we show respect to ourselves? We will be discussing ways to respect yourself. Learning to cope in a positive way is wanting the best for yourself and showing self respect.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

At this time of year, we start to run low on supplies of tissues and wipes. If you are willing to donate a box of tissues or a packet of wipes to your child's classroom, we would be very grateful for your kind offering!

Our Gymnastics program continues this Thursday with Session #3.

Thank you to those parents who have volunteered their time to help us with this program. An email will be sent out to our parent volunteers each Monday as a reminder of the upcoming session you have offered to help with.

We are looking forward to chatting with you all this week at our Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences. Not only will you have a chance to discuss your child's progress but your child will also be provided an opportunity to share with you some some of their learning they are proud of.
