 CHESS @ ST AUGUSTINE'S

Our Term 2 tournament was once again run as a round robin event with Charlie and Fidel sharing first place on 4.5 points out of 6. Charlie and Fidel drew their individual game but both lost one other game to another player (Lachlan beat Fidel and Pearl beat Charlie). Lachlan finished in third place on 4 points. It was also great to see newcomer Ant win his first game in a school tournament!

=1st: Charlie

=1st: Fidel

3rd: Lachlan

Oak Park Interschool (May)

4th Place:

4.0 Lachlan

3.0 Marley

3.0 Fidel

2.0 Thomas H

1.5 Anthony

In Term 2, St Augustine’s participated in their third interschool event (after playing in 2 last year), and finished with their far best performance at an interschool so far: 4th Place. The event was held at Oak Park Primary School and had 34 players from 5 different schools. This time around, the St Augustine’s team felt far more confident and their collective improvement was highly noticeable! The standout player was Lachlan – the first St Augustine’s player to score 4 points (from 7 games) in an interschool. Fidel and Marley also scored 3 points each – personal records for both of them.

St Albans Interschool (June)

6th Place:

4.0 Thomas H

3.5 Charlie

3.0 Lachlan

3.0 Fidel

1.0 Anthony

Four weeks later (toward the end of Term 2), St Augustine’s played in another interschool – this time at St Albans Primary School and performed even better still! This tournament had 70 players from 7 different schools and was a particularly strong interschool event. The St Augustine’s team played like they truly belonged amongst these strong teams – and while their results looked fairly similar on paper to last time, they were in fact much better because of the strength of the competition. For example, 4 points in this event was a much bigger achievement than in the previous events. 3 points in this one is the equivalent to 4 in previous events et cetera. The strandout player from St Augustine’s was Thomas who scored 4 points – including a win in the final round against a student from winning school Fitzroy Community School!

Thanks, Grant

PREP NEWS

Welcome Back to Term 3.  We hope you all had a lovely break and were able to rest. This term will be a busy term with a very exciting event happening.

100 Days of Prep!

Yesterday we celebrated 100 days of Prep, we have been very excited all year by putting pom poms in our counting jar every single day. We started the day taking photos as we all dressed in our brightest clothes, for 100 days brighter. We made delicious fairy bread and did a counting activity, practicing writing to 100. We celebrated the day by having a glow in the dark dance party in the hall, we danced and sung as loud as we could. We fininshed the day presenting to the entire school, even though we were nervous- we practiced really hard and were very excited to show off our celebration dance and recieve our certificates. We are so proud of all our Prep students!!!

What a great start to primary school, here's to the many more 100s to go :)

Healthy Harold

Already, we have had an incursion which saw Healthy Harold come for a visit.   Healthy Harold spoke with the students about what it means to be a good friend and what they could do if they were feeling anxious or nervous about making new friends.  The students enjoyed listening to Healthy Harold and how he felt nervous about other animals at the zoo. As much as it was very nostalgic for the teachers, the students got a lot out of having a special visit with Healthy harold.

Grandparents Day

On Thursday the Prep students enjoyed having their grandparents and/or special visitors come to visit them in their classroom.  It was lovely to be able to celebrate Mass together and the students loved completing  a craft activity with their special visitors. The students also had the opportunity to share morning tea with them where the students had a yummy donut and juice.

Amazing pizza fest morning with 48h pizza and gnocchi bar restaurant team!  On Friday 19th July the 5/6 students experienced making pizza with amazing chefs! They had a few tricks up their sleeve. We are very grateful and we thank them for coming to our school and teaching us the secrets of making pizza. The pizza was very delicious!!! This special event was to conclude our restaurant digital menu projects created in Term 2.

During our pizza fest the Italian culture was experienced through food, singing, dancing and speaking the language with the chefs. A very enjoyable atmosphere and a great start to term 3 Italian!

1/2 Classroom News:

Last week the 1/2s begun the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program. They were all very excited and keen to learn what it was all about. The students were introduced to the program, and what they would be doing for this term. They learnt that the program is all about food education, specifically knowing where are food comes from, how its made, harvested and then put onto our plates. The students learnt about the basic rules of being in the kitchen, how to hold different utensils properly, and how they would have the chance to plant their own vegetables, water them to ensure they would grow, then harvest them. They got to read, and view different recipes, and then cut up their own fruit. They had a great time.
