Sport Science and the use of Data in High Performance Sport
On Thursday 1st August the students from years 3 to 6 had a visit from Mrs. Asdagi's brother, Michael. He is a Sports Scientist at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and he came to talk to the students about the use of data in high performance sport.
The student's learnt the three reasons why Sports Scientists collect data;
Data is collected in a variety of ways and needs to be interpreted so that the information can be shared with players and coaches. One important thing to remember is "If you can’t measure it. You can’t modify it."
In STEM the students are going to be using what they learnt from Michael by planning and conducting a statistical investigation. They will be collecting categorical and/or numerical data by doing a range of physical activities (running, jumping, etc.). Students will then interpret their data and share this information with the class.
We all learnt so much and hopefully have inspired the next generation of sports scientists!
