Music Matters

It’s been an exciting week in the world of our percussionists!

Our newly formed Drumline competed in the Australian Drumline Championships held at Barker College on Saturday night. Despite some illness, the students did the College proud, whilst Derek Jung, Year 11, did a sensational job in filling in at the last minute. I would like to extend my gratitude to Mr Ian Talati for his hard work and commitment to this ensemble and to the many parents who were able to provide support in loading the van and cheer for our performers at their first external performance!

Percussion workshop

Dr Michael Crawford, who adjudicated the Drumline Championships, and is a highly-regarded percussion lecturer at the University of North Texas, came to give our percussion students a workshop on all things percussion on Monday afternoon. This was a highly energised and well-received workshop, with the boys able to expand on their drumstick techniques and learn new skills. It was a highly beneficial workshop and a great experience for our young musicians.

HSC MUSIC Trials and preparation

Our HSC Music 1, 2 and Extension students performed their HSC programs for external markers at their Trial Performance examination yesterday in the Band Room. These students have worked with their teachers and accompanists to produce programs of a high standard, with their repertoire reflecting their topics and interests and were highly enjoyable performances to watch. Well done boys! The students will be presenting some of their program for our St Pius X community at the upcoming ‘Splinters, Splashes,  Stage, Stories and Sounds’ evening on 29 August in the Band Room.

Year 11 Music excursion

Our Year 11 Elective Music 1 and Music 2 students attended an Australian Music Composition workshop day on Friday 2 August at MLC Burwood. Our Music 2 students were given the unique opportunity of composing a short idea within 20 minutes which was then played live by the visiting Nomad string quartet! This is a valuable experience for any composer to be able to have their work performed. In contrast, the Music 1 students wrote and performed a rap in front of the other schools attending the workshop run by Australian rapper, Dobby. These experiences reflected the contrasting style and requirements of the Music 1 and Music 2 courses and were appreciated by our attending students and staff.
