Checking for Understanding in Maths Lessons

We are committed to delivering high-quality mathematics instruction that ensures all students develop deep and lasting understanding.

A key part of this approach is the use of Check for Understanding (CfU) strategies throughout our maths lessons.

Check for Understanding is a formative assessment strategy used to gather real-time insights into student learning. Rather than waiting until the end of a lesson or unit to assess understanding, CfU happens frequently and intentionally during teaching. This allows teachers to identify misconceptions, clarify student thinking, and adjust their instruction straight away.In our maths classrooms, teachers regularly ask targeted questions, use mini whiteboards, hand signals, or brief tasks to quickly scan the room and assess whether students have grasped the key concept. These quick checks allow teachers to make informed decisions about the next step in their instruction—whether to move on, provide another example, or revisit the concept in a different way.

This approach is closely aligned with the Gradual Release of Responsibility model. Teachers begin by modelling the learning (“I do”), move into guided practice (“We do”), and finally support students in independent application (“You do”).

Frequent CfU checks are crucial in determining when students are truly ready for that independent stage, or if they need more support before progressing.

By using CfU throughout the lesson, we ensure that no student is left behind. Every student receives the support they need, when they need it—helping them build confidence, competence, and success in mathematics.
