Time in the Cave!

Tanya Vaughan, Deputy Principal - Head of Primary

When I was a classroom teacher (yes, I once was fulltime in the classroom!) I thoroughly enjoyed the process of reviewing student learning and communicating each child’s strengths and areas of growth to parents in their reports. Today, rather than writing the reports, I believe in the importance of taking time to acknowledge and familiarise myself with the effort that every student gives to their learning across all areas of the curriculum.

And so, every six months, I sink into a metaphorical ‘reading cave’ – a place where all those that know me well understand that I take time out of my usual schedule to pause, to read and to reflect on student growth and progress as I read each student’s report. It’s a happy place for me for many reasons, and a time of learning about student learning and their approaches to the joys and the challenges. It is also a time of deep gratitude for the prayer, planning and perseverance given by our teachers as they come alongside and champion your children as young learners and people growing in Godly character.

Now that I am well into my fifth year at DCC, one of the added joys is seeing growth over time. As I read, a little smile often emerges as I read of the little learner who once was reluctant to engage in an area of learning or social connection, to finding their confidence and connecting with new ideas and other people in authentic and meaningful ways. It warms my heart to know that our primary students are being well supported by a range of diverse and creative teachers, each one bringing out something unique in each child and supporting them as they grow in kindness, grace and wisdom.

I trust you have taken time to read your child’s report and found good reasons to celebrate who they are as one of God’s children – curious, kind and thoughtful; and rejoiced in the effort and progress that has been highlighted as teachers have taken time to reflect upon their learning and contribution to our community. No doubt you are proud of your children….I know I am! And, I am thankful that we can continue to partner together to see each one of them equipped for a life of service, love and kindness in a world that needs them.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with you at our Primary Parent Teacher Interviews, commencing Tuesday 22 July (the day before students return to school next term) or Thursday 24 July.

Blessings to you each as you pause and take a selah moment with your children…they are ready for a good holiday now after a full term of learning, experiences and celebratory moments.

To be honest, so are their teachers! Enjoy the break!
