We have had a busy fortnight since the last newsletter! We have attended the Grade 3-6 Athletics Carnival at Coburg Athletics Track, participated in Australia's Largest Anti-Bullying Lesson, had our final Dance lesson with Sheena, dressed up for Science Week and completed Science Experiments in class. Miss Khammy also attended the DigiTech Olympics with 10 students from Grade 4 & 5 yesterday.
Australia's Largest Anti-Bullying Lesson run by Kids Helpline was held online on Monday 11/8/25 to coincide with Bullying-No Way Week. All 3/4 classes watched the lesson online and learned how to be upstanders. Please see the attached posters about the event and also to further understand how to be an upstander against bullying.
Science Experiments to celebrate Science Week
3/4A
For Science week in 3/4A, we explored the crystallisation process by making salt crystals. Student created their own shapes and geodes using pipe cleaners before making a chemical solution using borax and hot water. As the water cooled, salt crystals were formed. Although this process took about 2 days, students were excited to see the progress and end results of their amazing crystals.
3/4B
3/4C
On Wednesday in 3/4C, the students completed an 'Elephant's Toothpaste' experiment. In this experiment we added hydrogen peroxide and dish soap to help create bubbles and a catalyst (yeast) which allowed us to speed up the reaction. The hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) decomposes naturally into water (H2O) and oxygen (O2). This resulted in a huge bubbly reaction which helped us to visualise the process.
You can make it at home too by clicking on the link above!
3/4E
We were busy bees in 3/4E, learning about pollination of plants through eating some delicious treats. We a bouquet of flowers and then ate some cheese puffs, making sure we got some dust or 'pollen' on our fingers. Then, using our bee fingers, we visited each of the flowers and pollinated them.
As well as all the fantastic extra things that have been organised, we have also been doing a lot of learning! We learnt about multiplication and division and practised using formal algorithms for both of these. We also thought about real life use of multiplication and division and applied this knowledge to worded questions.
We are in the middle of a fractions and decimals unit at the moment and have been exploring using fraction walls and manipulatives to find equivalent fractions. Next week, we will look at converting fractions and decimals.
We are over half way through 'Charlotte's Web' by E.B. White. WE have enjoyed getting to know Charlotte, Wilbur, Fern and all the other animals at Zuckerman's Farm. We have practised summarising, finding the main idea, finding figurative language and other comprehension skills.
Alongside Charlotte's Web, students have been planning and are beginning to write a story about two unlikely friends. We've been developing characters and settings and working on sizzling starts to engage the reader. We look forward to seeing the finished results of these stories in the coming weeks!
Don't forget to get your Book Week costumes organised for our dress up day and parade next Wednesday. The parade will be on the basketball court from 9:15am.
Digi-Tech Olympics
On Thursday the 14th of August, a handful of students from Grade 4 and 5 were selected to compete in the Maths Digi-Tech Olympics held at Glenroy College. This event was an amazing experience for those who attended as they participated in various STEM activities such as:
These 11 students worked exceptionally well as a team to bring home yet another 1st place trophy for Pascoe Vale North Primary School. Well done to all of these students!
