What’s New in Enrichment?  Something very cool!

We have exciting news to share related to our extension program!

The Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP) is an online extension program for high-achieving students in Years 5-8. It offers courses in English and Mathematics, with students participating in weekly virtual lessons which provide challenging learning experiences.

The program is designed for high-ability students who are selected by the Department of Education and Training based on student achievement data. Schools are also able to nominate students with proven high levels of achievement.  Understandably, the selection process for the program is rigorous with only the highest achieving students being accepted into their programs.

We are thrilled to announce that EIGHT of our Year 5 students have been accepted into next term’s course in Mathematics! Louis Anne, Neal Joshi, Luca Margirier, Sophia Oien, Liora Olshina, Marc Philips, Idelle Sakareassen and Alfie worrall! A massive congratulations to these champions: we can’t wait to see how you embrace this fantastic opportunity to extend your learning even further.

Thank you to our senior school teachers for nominating these students - your belief in their abilities has been validated!

MSL Sessions

We have had some fun in our MSL sessions this term.  I love how the students are all happy to see me and stop me in the yard just to say hello.

In prep we have been working on the first two stages of LLLL letters.

  • Practicing recognising the letter and saying the sound.

  • Practicing the correct formation of the letters.

  • Blending the letters into words, writing words and sentences.

Sometimes, if we have finished the planned work, we play a learning card game.  The one we have been using in prep, assists students in learning the beginning sounds in words.  (Plus it’s fun)

In year 1 – we have been working on phonemic awareness, letter/sound correspondence, reading and digraphs.  (2 letters that come together to make one sound. SH, WH, PH, QU, TH.)

We always work on correct letter formation, spelling rules, discussion of the meanings of new words.

In year 2 and 3 – we have been working on phonemic awareness and spelling rules.

We always work on correct letter formation, reading and we discuss the meanings of new words.

Sometimes, if we have finished the planned work, we play a learning card game.  We have 3 different (more difficult than for prep) games to choose from, and they all reinforce the sounds/spelling rules we have learned.

The students enjoy the games and forget they are learning.

Dolphin Ambassador

This term, our Marine Ambassadors Fleur, Jaden, Amaya and Hugo attended workshops where they learnt about some of the amazing sea creatures that call Port Phillip Bay home. They practised sharing the information with younger students at the schools they visited, in preparation for a peer teaching session here at CJC. This week, some of our Year 1 classes had the honour of being taught by these brilliant Year 6 students, which was a fabulous way to finish our science unit about water.
