Prep SC - Learning

Ms Caitlin & Ms Stanton

Howdy all,

We’re nearly at the end of Term 2 and what a fantastic term it’s been! Prep students have completed the first four stages of Little Learners Love Literacy, meeting all of the characters and, thus, learning all of their letters and sounds.

In celebration we threw a birthday for the main character of LLLL, Milo Monkey and Prep SC really made it special!

Celebrating Milo’s birthday with party games!

In literacy students have been working on reading and writing different genres. After reading and discussing “Can I Be Your Dog” by Troy Cummings and “I Wanna Iguana” by Karen Kaufman Orloff, in which the protagonists write letters to persuade the given readers for a variety of requests, Prep SC tried their hand at working together to write a class letter before writing one independently. Using this letter format, students tried to persuade Mr Rodrigues to get a school dog (I hope it works!).

Writing our class letter.

An independently written letter asking for a school hamster.

How could you say no to that face!?

In maths students have been working with numbers to 20, applying their knowledge of part whole relationships to more complex numbers and practising their numeral formation. Recently we have also been revising our prior knowledge of patterns, shapes, and location with students engaging in activities such as searching for environmental shapes and creating maps to find treasure.

On the hunt for shapes.

Practising giving directions and finding location on a life size map.

As we conclude our Religion and Inquiry unit, students have been broadening their ideas on where change can be found. We mapped out the Gregorian seasons alongside the Wurundjeri seasons and identified the various changes that occur from season to season. Students have also been investigating how things have changed for children over time and what the similarities and differences are between how they live and how their grandparents lived. Using the story of Jesus calming the storm, we have also discussed how our emotions can shift in response to changes around us in our own lives. Students then came up with ways that they can “calm the storm” inside of themselves during tumultuous times.

Students wrote ideas on how we can calmly  respond to changes around us.

A wonderful example of change from the past to the present!

In our wellbeing time, students have begun working on the Prep project for the art show. Now that Milky is looking so good, she’s going out…to the MOOvies of course (thanks for that one, Ms Caitlin; she’s here all year, folks)!

We’re so incredibly proud of the learners in Prep SC and are looking forward to the amazing insights they’ll share come Term 3!

Have a wonderful and safe term break,

Ms Stanton and Ms Caitlin
