Student Excellence

At Bemin Secondary College, we are proud to offer our high-achieving students a range of enrichment opportunities that extend their learning beyond the classroom. This term, students in Years 7 and 8 have engaged in two exciting programs that highlight their creativity, critical thinking, and curiosity about the world around them, through both science and storytelling.
Designed by Nature: Biomimicry @ Royal Botanic Gardens
On Thursday, June 19th, selected Year 7 and 8 students participated in a hands-on STEM enrichment day exploring biomimicry - using nature as inspiration for solving real-world problems.
Part of the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series, and fully funded by the Department of Education and Training, the program introduced students to incredible bio-inspired inventions and the natural systems behind them.
Students observed plant structures, explored biological strategies, and applied design thinking to create their nature-inspired solutions. From Velcro to eco-buildings, they discovered how nature’s adaptations can shape sustainable innovation.
The day encouraged systems thinking, collaboration, and creativity, leaving students inspired to see the natural world as a source of ideas for a healthier planet.
Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP): English
Bemin Secondary College regularly has students participating in the Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP) via Virtual Schools Victoria.
Being a part of the VHAP program was such a refreshing change from my usual learning routine. It pushed me creatively and gave me a lot of opportunities to experiment with my writing. I never really expected my piece to be chosen for publication, so when I found out, I mean it felt surreal. It's one thing to write something for yourself, but having it recognised like this boosted my confidence. I'll carry this experience with me moving forward.
Mihika
Last term, two of our Year 8 students, Ishmay and Mihika, were recognised for their exemplary writing on the theme Hope in Dystopian Times.
The 9-week VHAP course was quite interesting and fun! We each wrote a piece, which we improved according to the things we learnt in the course. It was a unique experience altogether, but the best part was that the poem that I had been writing for the whole term had been selected to be published on the VHAP website! It was a great opportunity, and I believe that I have learnt a lot from it!

Their exceptional pieces have been shared on the VHAP Exceptional Work site. Take a look at their outstanding work using the links below.
