Senior School

Senior School - Assistant Principal Address
It is a pleasure to share some of the memorable achievements and events that have marked our first semester of 2025. Our Year 10 students spent Term One learning about the College’s expectations and routines, and throughout Term Two have worked to solidify strong academic behaviours as senior school learners. They have also played an important role in shaping their legacy as the second cohort of students at Bemin. Our Year 11 students have hit the ground running in their VCE and VM journey, setting a strong example for future cohorts as they navigate the challenges and excitement of their senior studies. We are proud to be building a vibrant and thriving school community through the positive contributions of staff, students, and families.
Some of the highlights of Semester One include:
Harmony Week Celebrations: Harmony Week was a fantastic event where students embraced and celebrated cultural diversity. Students had the opportunity to wear their cultural attire, perform traditional dances, and learn about each other’s cultures, fostering a sense of unity and respect within our school community.
Senior School Homework Club: Attendance numbers have continued to grow each week at homework club this year with our senior students demonstrating a strong emphasis on their academic achievement as they strive for excellence.
Careers and Pathways: Many students have been actively working with Charmaine De Sousa, our Careers and Pathways Leader, to explore suitable pathways. Students were provided with opportunities to engage in a work experience program, helping them gain valuable insights into their future careers. Charmaine has also provided opportunities for our students to access invaluable careers information through excursions and access white card training to enrich and boost their pathways and career prospects.
Senior School Examinations: Our Year 10 students successfully completed their first senior school examinations for Semester One and our Year 11 students also completed their first VCE exams. All students demonstrated a high level of respect for the process thereby demonstrating their high regard for the college values of excellence, respect and community.
College Values Awards: We were also very proud to see many of our students reaching above and beyond to demonstrate the college values. These students have been recognised with College Values and Academic Awards during Semester One, highlighting their dedication and positive contributions to our school community.
Year 10 School Formal: We are excited for this event and look forward to seeing our students enjoy a memorable evening.
VCE/VM Information Evening: Students and families attended a VCE/VM Information Evening to prepare for course counselling sessions where Year 11 and 12 pathways will be discussed in Term 3. This event provided crucial information to help students make informed decisions about their future academic journeys.
Thank you to all the families, students, and teachers who have contributed to making Semester One a success. We look forward to many more achievements and memorable moments in the coming months ahead.

Year 10 Update
Year 10 Students’ Successful Transition
We are pleased to share that our Year 10 students have made a seamless transition into senior secondary school this term, demonstrating impressive adaptability and commitment to their studies. Over the past few months, we have seen remarkable growth in our students' academic and personal development as they settle into a new school and new routines.
From the very start, Year 10 students have shown a clear dedication to academic rigor. They have embraced new challenges and responsibilities with enthusiasm, approaching their studies with a focus and determination that reflects their readiness for the increased demands of senior secondary education. Teachers have observed an eagerness to engage with more complex concepts, ask insightful questions, and take ownership of their learning.
In addition to their academic progress, Year 10 students have been actively involved in creating a positive and collaborative learning atmosphere. They are already developing key skills in time management, critical thinking, and self-motivation—skills that will serve them well as they continue their educational journey. The students have embraced the expectations of senior school with enthusiasm and commitment, demonstrating their readiness to take on more responsibility in their learning. They have shown excellent focus in establishing strong "ready to learn" routines, both in the classroom and outside of it. This includes consistent effort in staying organized, managing their time effectively, and actively participating in class discussions and activities.
Staff have worked closely with all students to provide the necessary support and guidance, helping them navigate this significant change with confidence. The strong foundation that has been built this year will serve our students well as they continue their academic journey.
As a school we look forward to seeing even more success and progress as the year continues!
The Year 10 Team
Year 10 student reflections:
I really like the opportunities that we get and the amount of help the school gives us to learn and to aim for our goals. I also like the teachers who help with careers because they can help you get a job and help you get a job and a higher ATAR score.
Vivaan Chawla 10C
I enjoy our health and PE teacher Ms Cusack. She’s funny and good at managing our class. Transitioning to Bemin was a slow but fun process.
Josiah Pearce 10I
The transition to Bemin was smooth, although finding your classes is still hard. Trying to figure out what building you’re in takes a long time but I would say Bemin Secondary College is excellent, especially my favourite teacher Miss Olga who made this first term amazing!
Iranga Mugisho 10M
Moving from my old school to Bemin Secondary was a big change. It was difficult at first because I had to make new friends and meet new people, however,I met some very welcoming people. This helped me feel more comfortable and enjoy my time at school. The teachers and learning support were very passionate about teaching and helping students from different schools. Even though coming to Bemin was a big change, the number of opportunities that were given to students such as different electives, interschool sports and upcoming events like formal and athletics helped us feel more engaged and enjoy our high school life.
Kaavya Patel 10F
For me, the start of Year 10 has been filled with excitement and challenges, as I have had to adjust to the new environment I am now in and the expectations the school follows. There have been some challenges I have faced so far this term. For example, getting to class on time due to how open and spacious the school is, as well as the difficulty of adjusting to the change in schoolwork. One of the classes I have enjoyed so far is Maths because I understand the concepts easily, and if I am in doubt, my teacher corrects me and helps me improve my work. An event I have enjoyed so far is Culture Day. It showcased the cultural diversity throughout the school, and we got to observe different cultural backgrounds and how students and teachers show appreciation for their heritage. Compared to my previous school, Bemin is different in many ways. One of the main differences is that my old school mainly focused on the primary school, as it was a P–9. This made it difficult for the majority of high school students, as the school prioritised the junior students over the senior students. Although the change from Year 9 to Year 10 was overwhelming at first, I have begun to feel more comfortable and used to the change in environment.

Year 10 Term 2
As Term 2 draws to a close, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the impressive growth and achievements of our Year 10 cohort. Now in their second term of senior secondary school, our students have truly begun to find their rhythm—settling into new routines, rising to academic expectations, and engaging actively in a wide range of school experiences.
Over the past eleven weeks, students have shown increasing confidence and maturity as they adapt to the demands of senior school life. The transition from junior to senior secondary can be challenging, but our Year 10s have embraced the change with enthusiasm and resilience.
A major milestone this term was the Year 10 Formal Exam Week, their first experience sitting a full week of exams under formal conditions. Students approached the week with a strong sense of responsibility and focus. They arrived on time, followed exam protocols, and gave their best effort in each subject. The experience has not only tested their academic understanding but also helped them develop essential skills in time management and self-directed study—vital preparation for VCE.
Term 2 also provided students with opportunities beyond the classroom. Many proudly represented the school in inter-school sports competitions, showing great teamwork and school spirit across sports including football, netball, and soccer.
A standout learning experience this term was the police incursion, where our local Proactive Policing Unit Officers spoke with students about real-life issues such as youth safety, decision-making, and community responsibilities. The session sparked thoughtful discussion and helped students better understand their role in society.
“The police incursion was eye-opening. It made me think more seriously about consequences and choices, a year 10 student commented to the presenter..
As Term 2 wraps up, it’s clear the Year 10 students have built a solid foundation for the remainder of the year. Their positive attitude, strong participation, and willingness to challenge themselves are setting them up for even greater success in Term 3 and beyond.
Well done to all Year 10 students on a productive and successful term. Keep striving, stay curious, and continue growing—you’re on the right track.
Year 10 First Formal Exams - Reflections
Last week marked a major milestone for our Year 10 students as they undertook their first formal examination week. Spanning five days, the exams tested students across multiple subjects under full exam conditions—providing a realistic and valuable introduction to what lies ahead in their senior years.
Despite the natural nerves that come with sitting exams for the first time, students approached the week with maturity, focus, and determination. Students arrived on time, demonstrated respectful behaviour, and adhered to exam protocols. Their ability to stay composed and give their best effort in each session is a credit to their work ethic and growing resilience.
The week not only assessed students’ academic understanding but also helped them build important skills like time management, independent study habits, and exam preparation techniques—foundations that will serve them well in future senior assessments. For many students, the week served as more than just a test of knowledge. It was also a lesson in organisation, time management, and perseverance.
Sitting exams in proper exam conditions really pushed us even though the process is quite intimidating. I’m pleased with my textiles exam results due to the strict exam conditions . These conditions help us envision how VCE exams are going to be like. –
Poshita 10K
Managing my time for study was a bit tricky with the exam timetable being back to back. But having sat a VCE Unit 1 exam the week before helped me to understand what sitting an exam in VCE style conditions would be like. Overall, I felt like I did my best. – Kavya 10H
Congratulations to our Year 10 students for successfully completing their first formal exam week. You’ve taken a big step in your academic journey with determination and integrity. The experience has laid a strong foundation for your future studies—and we’re proud of the way you’ve begun that journey.
Year 10 Proactive Policing Unit Incursion
Our Year 10 students had the valuable opportunity to take part in a presentation by the Proactive Policing Unit, a visit that made a lasting impression on both students and staff.
The session focused on serious and relevant issues facing young people today, including the dangers of social media misuse, physical altercations, peer pressure, and the long-term consequences of poor decision-making. Delivered by experienced officers, the presentation was honest, thought-provoking, and tailored specifically to the challenges faced by teenagers navigating life both online and offline.
Students were engaged and respectful throughout, listening carefully to stories and scenarios shared by the officers. The message was clear: one impulsive action—whether online or in-person—can have a serious impact on a young person’s future. The officers emphasised the importance of thinking critically, making safe choices, and seeking support when needed.
This incursion was part of a broader focus this term on preparing our Year 10s for the responsibilities of senior secondary school and beyond. With their first formal exam week behind them and participation in inter-school sports and enrichment activities on the rise, it’s clear the Year 10 cohort is stepping up and growing into their roles as young leaders within the school community.
We thank the Proactive Policing Unit for their time, honesty, and commitment to educating and supporting our students. Their message will no doubt stay with our Year 10s as they continue to navigate the challenges and opportunities of adolescence.
Year 11 Update
It is with great pride that I write this update on behalf of the Year 11 team. Congratulations to all Year 11 students on the completion of Unit 1. As the foundation cohort of Bemin Secondary College, students have set a strong example for future year levels to follow.
Throughout Semester 1, students have completed formal examinations, countless assessment tasks, participated in excursions, engaged with industry experts, and focused on building the knowledge and skills they need for their chosen pathways.
Supported by the College’s teachers and education support staff, Year 11 students have now commenced Unit 2 studies. The remainder of the year will be particularly busy as students begin planning for Year 12 and the many exciting milestones that come with the final year of secondary education.

Speech given by Hermila A, College Captain, at the Year 11 Celebration Assembly
Good afternoon students and staff,
My name is Hermila Abuye and I will be reflecting on the past semester and addressing some achievements.
As we come together today, not only will we celebrate the achievements and efforts of our fellow classmates, but we will also have a moment to reflect on how far we have come as individuals during our Year 11 experience.
Being the first Year 11 cohort comes with many challenges; not knowing what to have expected this year or having older students to talk to about their experience to have an idea of what to expect. All these small things can have a big part in our journey but we as a leadership team are so proud of how resilient you all have been and your continuous persistence.
This semester hasn't been easy adjusting to workload, balancing school life with outside life and staying motivated during SAC season and exam season. Throughout all these challenges, we have also had many positives such as friendships, growth and academic improvement. These are all small things that positively impact our lives.
As a student leadership team through semester one we have been able to speak on behalf of our cohort to make changes and bring new ideas. A few examples of things we have done as a student leadership committee are the planning of reconciliation week and environmental week. These are just some small wins but are huge for us as a student leadership committee. We’re just getting started, but we’re excited for what’s coming next. This term has been rewarding and a major step into our futures. We are so proud of you all and can't wait to see what semester 2 brings. We hope you enjoy your holidays and stay safe.
Academic Progress
Through great dedication and effort, many students achieved academic success and earned Satisfactory results in their subjects, thus placing them in a strong position to complete the two year VCE program.
In the coming weeks, students who earned Not Satisfactory results in their subjects will participate in Academic Review Panels with members of the Year 11 Leadership team. These panels will discuss study plans, evaluate academic performance and consider pathways. Where the viability of a student’s VCE is at significant risk, parents will also be invited to the panel.
Over the term break, all students are encouraged to reflect on their academic performances, discuss their results with their families, and commence Semester 2, ready to embrace their learning. This will also ensure that students are in the best possible position for promotion into Units 3 and 4.
Family Support
The College appreciates the work all families put in to supporting students to achieve their individual learning best.
To continue to support students, and maintain high expectations, I encourage families to:
- Check in daily with students regarding their progress at school;
- Check Compass and email regularly so that you are aware of events, activities and your child’s progress;
- Check in with teachers regularly;
- Request to be added as a guardian to your child’s Google Classroom;
- Encourage your child to engage in daily homework tasks; and
- Check progress reports, semester reports and learning tasks on Compass

Clubs and Events at Bemin Secondary College Senior Campus
National Reconciliation week: A week of Unity, Art and Reflection
From May 27 to June 3, Bemin Secondary College marked National Reconciliation Week with daily student-led activities promoting respect and unity.
- Monday: Acknowledged National Sorry Day with a student announcement over the PA and year-level discussions.
- Tuesday: Students created a Torres Strait Islander Flag using handprints.
- Wednesday: A poster competition was launched.
- Thursday: Posters were submitted and judged by student leaders.
- Friday: A student band performed live, and the poster competition winners were announced — with $10 and $5 canteen vouchers awarded to first and second place.
Students collaborated to create a beautiful Torres Strait Islander Flag using handprints – a symbol of unity, identity, and collective respect.
Congratulations to our first-place winner, Ruby Thapar who received a $10 canteen voucher, and our second-place winner, RJ Poutapu-Matenga who took home a $5 canteen voucher!
We wrapped up the week with a lively performance from our talented student band, who played during lunchtime to create a positive, inclusive atmosphere. As the music played, student leaders shared messages about the importance of reconciliation and announced the poster competition winners.
A big thank you to all who participated and supported these activities. Your voices, talents, and enthusiasm made this a powerful and memorable Reconciliation Week at Bemin Secondary.
World Environmental Day: Pick It Up for Pizza
To celebrate World Environment Day on Thursday, June 5th, the student leaders hosted a fun and impactful competition: Pick It Up for Pizza!
During lunchtime, students teamed up to collect as much litter as possible around the school grounds in just 15 minutes. Equipped with gloves and bags, participants helped clean up our campus — all for a chance to win a free pizza of their choice!
After a close count, RJ and Faycal came out on top, collecting the most rubbish and proudly enjoying their well-earned pizza.
This event reminded us that small actions can lead to meaningful change. Thank you to everyone who took part, and to the Student Leadership Team for organising such a fun and eco-friendly initiative!
NAIDOC Week Celebration
As part of NAIDOC Week celebrations, students at Bemin Secondary College were invited to take part in a special Rock Garden Project, held at lunchtime on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Students gathered to paint rocks with meaningful symbols, patterns, and messages that reflect and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. The painted rocks were added to our soon growing NAIDOC Rock Garden, creating a beautiful, student-led tribute to culture, creativity, and community.
Student leaders also supported the week by creating engaging activities for our morning Check & Connect classes, helping the whole school learn more about the significance of NAIDOC Week.
A big thank you to everyone who joined in and helped bring this project to life!
School Clubs
Lunchtime clubs at Bemin Secondary College launched not long ago and have already become a great way for students to connect, relax, and explore their interests. From gaming to music, dance, and anime, students have been showing up with enthusiasm and positive energy each week.
Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening:
Monday: Board Game Club – Library
Tuesday: Anime Club – GLN
Thursday: Dance Club – Drama/Dance Room
Friday: Music Club – Music Room
These clubs have provided safe, welcoming spaces for students to express themselves, make new friends, and take a break from the busy school day. We’re proud of how respectful and inclusive the environments have been — thank you to all participants!
Clubs will continue to run next term and we’re excited to keep the momentum going.

Term 2 was a mix of challenges and memorable moments. Exams were one of the most stressful parts of the term; there was a lot of pressure to revise, manage time, and stay
across multiple subjects. Despite the challenges, getting through the exams was a relief.
One of the highlights was the Student Leadership Forum, where both senior and junior leaders came together at the senior campus for the first time. It was a huge opportunity to come together as one leadership team, share our thoughts, discuss important ideas, and reflect on leadership qualities and goals for upcoming events.
Next term, I’m looking forward to starting new electives, attending formal and athletics day. There are many exciting things to look forward to in term 3.

Every one of us has shaped the college this year academically and through pride and resilience. The year isn't over yet but we should be proud of what we have overcome so far. It is important to acknowledge all your hard work so far and continue that so you can achieve the best you can.
Unit 1 was a great challenge but moving onto unit 2 we should continue the same determination and dedication. During these terms holidays take a moment to reflect on your achievements and everything you have done. It's important to take a break from studying to come back stronger. Term 3 is a fresh start and a new beginning.
At our meetings this term we are looking into a celebration day this Thursday and activities at lunchtime for NAIDOC Week. We are also working on looking at Year 12 jackets. If there is anything which would interest you feel free to let the leadership team know. Next term we have the athletics carnival to look forward to.
Have a great break and Thank you.
