Principal's Report

As we approach the end of Term 2, it’s a pleasure to reflect on a particularly special few weeks in the life of our school community. Last week, we had the privilege of hosting staff and students from our sister school, the Shanghai Foreign Language School, as part of the re-establishment of our longstanding partnership. This visit marked the renewal of a relationship, first established in 2011, that we deeply value.

Over the course of the week, our visitors joined classes, shared meals, explored Melbourne’s landmarks, and participated in a range of cultural activities with our students. The exchange of stories, laughter, and learning across languages and cultures was a joy to witness. Just as importantly, it reminded us all of the powerful role that international partnerships play in developing global perspectives and building empathy and understanding.

Reciprocal sister school relationships like this offer much more than a change of pace to the school calendar. They bring language learning to life—moving it beyond textbooks into real-world communication—and they give students on both sides the chance to learn how others live, think, and learn. For a school like ours, where language learning is central and diversity is one of our greatest strengths, these experiences are vital.

This week also marks our celebration of LOTE (Languages Other Than English) Week. Students have been engaging in language-based challenges, cultural workshops, and food and art experiences from around the world. We’ll end the term with a Cultural Dress Day, where students are encouraged to wear clothing that reflects their heritage or identity—a vibrant reminder of the strength of our school community.

On a personal note, I was lucky enough to study in France for a year during my university studies—studying Biochemistry at  l’Université de Montpellier.  This experience was only possible because of the language learning I had done at school and beyond. That year shaped my worldview, introduced me to lifelong friends, and gave me a deeper appreciation of culture, history, and difference. Language learning opens doors—not just to new careers, but to a wider, richer experience of life.

As we head into the winter break, I want to extend my thanks to all who contribute to the inclusive and outward-looking culture that defines our school. Suzanne Cory High School thrives because of the generosity, curiosity, and openness of its community. I wish you all a restful and restorative break and look forward to another rich and rewarding term ahead.
