Piggery
Certificate III in Pork Production students will be heading to Serpentine next week for a piggery tour to reinforce what they have learned during their Cert III studies.
This will mean that students attending the tour will be unable to enter our piggery the day before or the day after the tour due to strict biosecurity policies at both facilities. Students attending need to wear the appropriate uniform that is not the same one worn on Farm at the College (unless you can ensure clothing will be thoroughly cleaned before being worn in our piggery).
Weekend Duty
Year 12s - please take note of when your weekend duty is rostered. This is the last term to complete it, and it forms part of two of your core units. Everyone needs to ensure they are handing in their weekend duty paperwork to the on-duty Technical Officer by Sunday afternoon. This will ensure it doesn't get forgotten. This paperwork is mandatory for weekend duty to be recorded and signed off. If you don't hand in the completed paperwork, you will be rostered for another weekend.
Farm Skills Training
Those students who have nominated to compete in the Farm Skills Competition as part of the Perth Royal Show, please keep an eye and ear out for training days and times. Trainers for this years' event are:
- Sheep events - Miss Martini and Miss Baker
- Chemical safety and chemical calibration - Mr de Beer and/or Mr Rice-Fazey
- Tractor driving - Mr West and/or Mr Rice-Fazey
- Fencing - Mr Fox (this will be Tuesday afternoons only)
- Welding - Mr Ball
If you wish to complete extra training sessions, please speak with the Technical Officers assigned to that event.
Certificate III in Agriculture
Year 12 students are reminded to keep working on their Cert III in Ag units. Take every opportunity possible to get hours under your belt for your respective units. Year 11 students wanting to undertake Certificate III in Agriculture next year, now is the time to start pushing ahead with your Cert II competencies. Get as many of them completed as possible. This will show us that you have what it takes to do well at a Cert III level and reduce the workload for next year.
Information on Certificate III in Agriculture was presented on Monday to interested students and their parents. If you have any further questions about the workload, application process, available units or anything to do with Cert III, don't hesitate to contact Mr de Beer or Mrs Iles.
Animal Welfare Inspection
Over the school holidays, some members of the Farm staff underwent captive bolt gun and humane euthanasia training. This was followed by an Animal Welfare inspection by Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) inspectors. They were impressed by our abattoir setup and were very happy with our animal welfare standards and policies. We are looking forward to collaborating with DPIRD further and organising some training and presentations for both staff and students in the near future.
Excursions
There are a number of excursions coming up this term. Students are reminded to get their clearance forms signed by the teacher/trainer from the class they will be missing to ensure they are eligible to attend the excursion. Parents - if you could please get permissions in as soon as possible after they are sent out by Consent2Go, this allows us plenty of time to cater for the number of students that will be attending (or make provisions for those unable to go).
