 Week 10 of Term 3, 2023 (Holiday Edition)

SMCC 2023 SWIMMING CARNIVAL:

 

Students are to arrive at the Woree Pool by 8:25am NOT TO SCHOOL and will be dismissed from the pool at 3:11pm.

 

The Woree Pool car park area can become very congested with traffic therefore families should consider another drop-off and pick up point such as Charlotte Close, where there is a walkway to the Woree pool. 

 

Students are to arrive and head straight to the grandstand to the house areas. At 8:30am students will assemble in their year level roll marking area with their Pastoral mentor or Head of Year. See below for locations… 

 

 

Uniform and Organization: 

  • Hat, sunscreen, and water bottle are required (water bubblers are available).
  • House T-shirts, sports shorts and thongs/slides are to be worn for Entry and Exit.
  • Modest swimwear (you do not need to wear a rashie or board shorts – remember you will be diving in) optional – goggles & swim cap.
  • Morning Tea & Lunch (Woree Kiosk available & College Tuckshop available from 10:30am)

Students can use their SMCC draw string bag. All belongings are to be named on the tags located on SMCC apparel. 

  • As per the College Device Policy, mobiles and devices are NOT permitted during the day except for the allocated break time in the Swimming Program. Students will be able to access their mobile devices between 11.45am-12.15pm.
  • The College will not be taking responsibility for any unnamed items, devices or valuables which are lost, stolen or damaged at the swimming carnival. 
  •  If students are unable to swim on the carnival day, they MUST bring a note to give to their Pastoral mentor. The student will then be assigned a job where they will earn points for their House. 

Participation Events (no nomination required. Be ready to make every point count for your House):

  •  Participation 50m freestyle and 50m Breaststroke.
  • Inflatable Races.
  • Belly flop challenge.
  • Free time (lunch break).
  • Mad 5.

Nominations & Event Information: 

  • Make sure you are at the marshalling area at the correct time and the correct races. 
  • Please see attached the program of events for the day. 
  • Races will run from under 12’s up to open - alternating girls and boys.
  • To ensure students are on time for races, it is recommended that students (especially under 12 & 13) wear their swimmers under their sports uniform to the pool, as this age group is first to race. 
  • To assist House Leaders, it is recommended that all students stay in their house areas in the stands throughout the day. This will ensure students will not miss any events.
  • Each house has two lanes. Students must ONLY swim in their house lane otherwise points will not go to the correct house.

In your age group, there will be 2 competitors per House, per race.

  • 2 x competitive races per event (3 if required), followed by a participation race (no need to nominate for this). 
  • Please note that U13s is the only age group with 3 x competitive races per event. 
  • Events are: 50m Freestyle, 50m Breaststroke, 50m Backstroke, and 50m Butterfly.
  • Butterfly will only have 1 x competitive race per age group (2 x competitive races for U13s).
  • Ribbons will be awarded to 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place after each of the competitive races. 
  • Age Champion: Each race is timed. So only the overall top 3 timed place getters from each age group will contribute to the overall age champion points. 
  • Gift race will feature (fastest female and male swimmers from each age group and handicapped).
  • 50m Freestyle Relays: Mixed teams of boys and girls (best 8 swimmers per age group, 2 x teams of 4 competitors)

Decorations for House Areas in the Grandstands: 

  • No crepe paper or dyes allowed.
  • Faces painted with zinc must be used sparingly.
  • All decorations must be cleaned up at the end of the carnival by the students, not the teachers!

Junior Sport: Year 7, 8, 9 Sport Program:

JSS Sport: Wednesday afternoons

JSS teams will be training in Week 1 of term 4. Students, please bring your equipment to train. 

  • Students are expected to wear their SMCC Sport uniform weekly and wear the appropriate footwear. AFL players must have mouthguards and Soccer players must have shin pads and long socks. 
  • Please bring a hat, water bottle and sunscreen. 
  • Students will meet outside the HOB at 1.10pm.
  • Basketball and Volleyball will be travelling by bus to an off-site venue to train.
  • Soccer will walk to Pezzutti Park to train. All other JSS teams will remain at SMCC to train. 
  • Please contact your sports coach for more information. 

 

Term 4 JSS Draw:

 

Junior Sport (Year 7,8,9 students not in JSS teams):

Year 7, 8, 9 students (not participating in JSS Competition) have been placed into the Junior Sport Program.

The Junior Sports program provides opportunities for students to engage in the below sports options for term 3 and term 4 on Wednesday afternoons 1.17pm-2.57pm. Please be on time. 

Students are expected to wear their school sports uniform, appropriate footwear, and bring a hat, water bottle and sunscreen. 

The Junior Sport program commenced Wednesday 19th July and will run for term 3 and 4.

 

Junior Sport Program sport options:

  • Soccer Program (delivered by an accredited soccer coach)
  • Hockey Program (delivered by a performance hockey coach)
  • Netball Program (delivered by an advanced netball coach)
  • Sports Rotations (2-week rotations) and sports include- Ten Pin Bowling, Golf, Boxing, Gym, Outdoor fitness, Yoga, Cricket, and Volleyball.

Students have been sent an email with all information and instructions. 

Students are expected to check their emails daily. Please see roster below.

 

Junior Sport Rotation Roster- Term 4:

Senior Sport- Year 10 and Year 11 Interhouse Sports Competition:

Semester 2 will see the Year 10 and 11 students engage and compete in the Interhouse sports competition. 

Students have been placed into teams in their house groups.

Teams will compete against other teams for house points in the below sports:

  • Cricket
  • Basketball
  • Touch Football
  • Netball
  • Volleyball
  • Futsal

All students to please meet in the Nazareth Pavilion every Tuesday at 1.27pm (Period 5) for Senior Sport. All students are to wear their house shirt, bring a hat and water bottle.

Students that are not participating in the Interhouse Sports Competition can do Chess Club, Aspire to Teach Program, and/or Service and Justice group.

SMCC Netball Team- Winter Season Tuesday night competition

On Tuesday night St Mary’s 14U netball team took to the court in their first grand final against an inform Leprechauns.

The girls edged in front after the first quarter however Leprechauns surged in the second to reduce the lead to 1.

Our St Mary’s girls rallied in the second half. They pulled together and, with some impressive defence and expert shooting, they took the win and the championship 18 – 11.

Congratulations to: Layla Haami, Cathie McMinimee, Sian Stewart, Lauren Pedler, Bella Barbieri, Ivy Lenton-Carter, Rosin Stevenson, and Eloise Dalmeyer on an awesome season. 

Their hard work and dedication to the team ultimately led to a successful season.

Thank you to all the parents that came every night to support myself and the players and thank you to those who scored for me so I could coach.

SMCC Hockey Teams- Competing at the Cairns Hockey BDO Hockey Secondary School Carnival

 

St Marys sent 5 teams to the BDO Hockey carnival on Friday 8th September. St Marys teams played extremely well, earning a spot in 3 of the 4 finals.

St Marys narrowly lost the Year 7-9 Girls and Year 7-9 Boys finals by 1 goal.

The St Mary’s Senior Boys (Year 10-12) won their final against St Augustine’s. 

Beau Frazer (Year 7-9 Boys) and Lacey Walters (Year 10-12 Senior ladies) were named players of the carnival in their respective divisions.

A huge thank you to our volunteer coaches who supported SMCC staff and teams on the day, Peter Swain and Hayley Williams.

Service & Justice

During Senior Sport we have a group of St Mary's Students that go out into the community and engage themselves in community service. The St Mary's Service and Justice team has visited St Vincent De Paul, the Seville Mercy Conference Centre, and the Edmonton Gardens Aged Care Facility this term to offer their services in gardening, engaging, and connecting with the people within care by reading stories, and playing games. The group see their work as service to the community and would like to continue this work next term and in the future. 

 

Many thanks to Koko Wilson who has taken on the student leadership role in the group. 

Thank you to Mr Colin Free for developing this initiative and his great enthusiasm for this program.

Student expectations

No mobile phones during Sport: This includes all sport groups travelling offsite and JSS teams. Failure to meet this expectation will result in a detention. 

 

Expectations for students with regards to organisation: 

 

Read the Notices Located on the Student Portal each school day. 

Please check your emails daily. 

Bring a water bottle, hat and wear the appropriate attire and footwear to every Sport lesson. 

If your sport is a fitness-based activity, you will need to bring a towel. 

 

Expectations for students with regards to behaviour and engagement: 

  • Participate in the Sport/ Activity to the best of their ability.
  • Represent our College well when travelling offsite.
  • Demonstrate respectful and appreciative behaviour towards any outside provider facilitating a program along with a St Mary’s staff member.

Please note: Our Sport program involves some groups travelling offsite therefore please avoid making appointments during Tuesday and Wednesday sport.
