Literacy

We've begun our exploration of natural disasters by immersing ourselves in the fascinating world of volcanoes. To ignite curiosity and enthusiasm for the upcoming topic, students had the opportunity to witness the thrilling results when certain 'unique' ingredients were combined inside a homemade volcano. This hands-on experience not only piqued their interest but also enriched their natural disasters 'Word Bank' with a plethora of fantastic adjectives. As we progress, our students are diligently navigating the writing process, and they've already crafted some outstanding pieces that aim to persuade, inform, or entertain the reader.

Numeracy

What better way to start a fractions unit, than with food?!
 And who doesn’t love chocolate?

Students have enthusiastically embraced the world of fractions, with a particular focus on demonstrating and comprehending fractions through various models: the length model (utilizing a ruler), the set model (sharing a collection), and the area model (exploring shapes). In their journey through this unit, our students have been actively engaged in constructing fraction walls, skilfully folding squares and circles, employing pattern blocks, practicing equitable sharing with collections, and, of course, eating chocolate. As we progress through the unit, students will gain a deeper understanding of equivalent fractions before finishing the unit with something exciting.
