Important Health Update: Gastroenteritis Awareness
We wanted to take a moment to inform you about gastroenteritis (often referred to as a "stomach bug"), which has been circulating in the school community recently.
Gastroenteritis is an intestinal infection that can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and fever. While it is usually a mild illness, it can spread quickly, especially in environments like schools.
Key Symptoms of Gastroenteritis:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Stomach cramps
- Low-grade fever
- Fatigue
How It Spreads: Gastroenteritis is highly contagious and can spread through:
- Close contact with infected individuals
- Contact with contaminated surfaces or objects
- Consuming contaminated food or water
What Can You Do to Help Prevent the Spread?
- Encourage children to wash their hands thoroughly and frequently, especially after using the toilet, before eating, and after coughing or sneezing.
- Remind your child to avoid sharing food, drinks, or utensils.
- If your child is sick, please keep them home from school until they have been symptom-free for at least 48 hours to prevent spreading the illness to others.
- Maintain good hygiene practices at home, including cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces.
When to Seek Medical Help: While most cases of gastroenteritis resolve on their own, please contact your healthcare provider if your child is:
- Showing signs of dehydration (dry mouth, reduced urination, dizziness)
- Experiencing prolonged vomiting or diarrhea
- Under the age of 2 or has an underlying health condition
