CELEBRATING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE@CSPS

Foundation News

Foundation students had a very busy and exciting Term 3!

In phonics, students continued developing their knowledge of four- and five-sound words and were introduced to digraphs, such as "ch," "sh," "th," and "ck." This term, we are learning to read and spell two-syllable words. We are becoming phonics superstars!

In writing, Foundation students have been focusing on leaving sufficient spacing between their words and incorporating punctuation, such as capital letters at the beginning of their sentences and full stops at the end. We are learning the structure of a recount and how to include the who, what, where, and when, in our recounts of familiar events.

In Maths, students have worked exceptionally hard toward achieving their Toolbox goals and extending their knowledge of numbers up to 20. Last term, we focused on developing their understanding of additive strategies by learning different methods to effectively solve subtraction problems. This included ‘counting all,’ using hands-on materials, and drawing visual representations.

As part of our inquiry unit "Safe and Sound," we had many visitors to the Foundation rooms to help us learn about ways to stay healthy, active, and safe. This included Mel the dental nurse, Jess the nurse, the Responsible Pet Ownership team, the RACV Safety Squad, Harold and the Life Ed team. Thank you to our wonderful parents who volunteered their time to come and talk to us. We also celebrated our spectacular 100 Days of School, had a fantastic time at our first school concert, and learned many new skills at the school swimming program.

This term, we have our first school excursion to the Moonlit Sanctuary. We cannot wait!

MARRUNG KIDS DAY

Our students recently had the opportunity to attend an enriching Koorie Cultural Day, celebrating and learning about the rich traditions of Indigenous culture. The day began with a powerful Smoking Ceremony led by the Bunurong Land Council, symbolizing cleansing and connection to Country. Students enjoyed vibrant music performed by Ganga Djiri and a hip hop crew, blending modern and traditional styles. They also had the chance to taste bush tucker, exploring native foods, and learned about cultural tools and their significance. It was a memorable experience, deepening students' understanding and respect for First Nations culture. Thank you to our parents who also joined us.
