Valedictory Week | Gift of a Candle Service
This has been a great week for the Year 12s who left the School for the final time this morning after their traditional Fancy Dress Breakfast, procession through the Guard of Honour and viewing of the Leavers' DVD. Our Leavers thoroughly enjoyed the various celebratory events which culminated yesterday with a farewell from the whole school at the morning Gift of a Candle Service, and the evening Valedictory and Prize Giving where the students were joined by their families, the Secondary staff, Executive and special guest, Chief Operating Operating Officer of the Anglican Schools Commission, Ivan McLean. The Head Prefects Dylan Osborne and Sophie White spoke with confidence and poise expressing gratitude for their time at John Wollaston. Equally polished were Primary Head Boy Henry Osborne and Primary Head Girl Isla Dwyer who delivered the Primary School Goodbye at the morning service. Science teacher David Longman delivered the farewell address from the staff. It was heartfelt and warmly received by the students.
The evening event is continuing to build an important tradition of "shared success". Each student is presented to the Principal and academic and special prizes are awarded. It is wonderful to see the students warmly acknowledging the success of their peers. Congratulations to all recipients of prizes and awards, they are richly deserved. The musical interlude featured Hailey Utting and Sophie Lewin; performing 'All I Ask' by Adele.
We introduced a sporting flavour into Valedictory Week in 2020, a staff versus students netball game to win the Valedictory Mug. This has now become a popular tradition with both sides talking up their prospect of victory prior to the match. This year, the students were kitted in netball uniform with an accompanying cheer squad who whipped the spectators into a frenzy. Despite several staff on the sidelines due to injury, their team prevailed comfortably with Jaquie Fisher and Tracey Rogers proving a potent force in attack. Thank you to experienced umpires and John Wollaston parents, Natalie Smart and Nicole Prothero, who took time out of their busy day for the match.
The Year 12 Farewell Service led by Chaplain Justine was a moving time of worship in the Chapel with the students enthusiastically singing Shine Jesus Shine for the last time as a congregation. Thank you to Chaplain Justine who delivered a timely homily and parents of the Year 12s who were able to attend.
Fifteen Veterans were celebrated this week; a Veteran being a student who completes their entire schooling at John Wollaston. To acknowledge the special contribution and longevity of the Veterans, I host a morning tea during Valedictory Week which is also attended by the Executive. This is a special time when the students reflect informally on their school journey and share plans for their future. To families who have committed to the School for the duration of their children's education, I thank you most sincerely for the significant emotional and financial investment you have made.
Thank you to Year 12 parents and family members for supporting the events of this important week; the Valedictorians, the staff and I greatly appreciate your involvement. The Class of 2023 has left with our best wishes for the future.
With good wishes
Anne Ford
