What a busy few weeks we have had in the Health & Physical Education Curriculum!

Curriculum Update

Foundation:

Over past few weeks, the Foundation Students have had the opportunity to practise a different style of throwing and catching. The students were exposed to the game Ultimate Frisbee which provides differentiation and variation with throwing and catching methods. First, the students worked on developing their confidence with holding the Frisbee and then releasing it. We worked through this step by step concentrating on body stance, hand positioning on the frisbee and releasing time. Once the students demonstrated competency in these areas, we moved on to practising the crocodile and crab catch. It was pleasing to see the students improve as the lessons progressed.

Year One/Two:

Over past few weeks, the students have revisited the core concepts attached to their Fundamental Movement Skills e.g. throwing, catching and kicking. To practise these skills we utilised two different sports, Ultimate Frisbee and Kickball.

During Kickball the students practised making contact with a ball which was bowled towards them. From this, the students were then able to apply this skill to the game kickball and cooperate with their team effectively. The students also developed an understanding of how kicking accuracy plays a vital role in the game.

Ultimate Frisbee provided the students with the opportunity to learn and adopt a different style of throwing and catching. When throwing the Frisbee their aim was to try and keep the Frisbee as flat as possible as it flew through the air. They then learnt how to catch a Frisbee using the crocodile and crab catch methods. The next step in their learning was throwing accuracy. To conclude the lessons we had a house point challenge where the students had to try and hit designated targets to earn their house points.

Year Three/Four:

Over the past few weeks, the Level 5-6 students have had the opportunity to participate in a unit dedicated to Ultimate Frisbee. During these lessons, the students have focused on practising the required skills that will allow them to participate in match play. The students developed an understanding of the techniques needed to throw a frisbee correctly and accurately. They also learned the two catching methods for a frisbee which are the crocodile and crab catch. To improve the students accuracy, we ran a house point competition whereby the students had the chance to earn their house points but accurately throwing the frisbee at set targets.

Once the students demonstrated competency in all skill areas, we moved on to applying these to a real life game. The students were broken into 4 teams and played a grid game against the others. The teamwork and level of skill on display was fantastic to watch and all students should be proud of their efforts.

Mountain Biking Elective

Our select 3-6 students commenced their first elective session for the term. The purpose of this session was to introduce the students to Mountain Biking, discuss what they will learn throughout the unit and a big emphasis on the safety side of riding a bike.
