How we organise ourselves
Central Idea
We organise art elements to create our own unique visual language
This term in Visual Art, students are discovering how artists bring ideas to life by organising lines, shapes and colours in creative and meaningful ways. They will engage in a range of creative experiences that build confidence, curiosity and a willingness to take artistic risks, as they develop their own unique visual language.
We have begun with vibrant collage and drawing works inspired by Miró, where students explored the magic of colour mixing and discovered how the three Primary Colours combine to create bold Secondary Colours.
Students will also delve into mark making experiments, exploring a variety of line techniques and materials. Inspired by Yayoi Kusama, they will use oil pastels to create patterned sculptural forms, discovering how repeated marks can transform simple shapes into striking designs.
We are looking forward to an exciting Term 1 in Visual Art filled with colour, creativity and experimentation as students explore new ideas and begin developing their own unique visual language.
Year 1

Who We Are
Central Idea
Self-portraits express personal identity and our relationships with others
This term in Visual Art, our Year 1 students are exploring how art can help us share who we are. Through portrait work, students are discovering how colours, symbols, facial expressions and artistic choices can communicate their personality, feelings and experiences.
Using a variety of art materials and technique including painting, collage and drawing, students are experimenting with different ways to represent themselves. They are learning that self-portraits can tell a story about the creator by including the things they love, the people who are important to them, and the communities they belong to.
We are looking forward to an exciting Term 1 in Visual Art filled with colour, creativity and exploration, as students express their individuality, celebrate their connections to others, and recognise that every portrait is unique just like the artist who creates it.
Year 2

How We Express Ourselves
Central Idea
Art expresses emotions and influences communication culturally
This term in Visual Art, students are exploring how art communicates emotions across cultures and communities. They are investigating how ceremonies, festivals and cultural traditions inspire creative expression, and how artists use colour, symbols, pattern and form to represent feelings in meaningful ways.
Through a range of artistic explorations, students are learning how emotions such as happiness, anger, bravery and pride can be expressed visually. They are considering how different cultures represent these emotions and how symbolism and design can communicate powerful messages without words.
As they explore the concepts of Perspective and Connection, students are encouraged to be Open-minded and Caring, developing respect for diverse cultural traditions while building confidence in expressing emotion through their own creative choices.
We are looking forward to a rich and inspiring term in Visual Art as students discover the many ways art connects us through shared human experiences.
Year 3

How We Express Ourselves
Central Idea
Artists interpret and represent the world around them in abstract forms
This term in Visual Art, students are exploring how artists use abstract forms to represent ideas and experiences in imaginative ways. Through line, shape and colour, they are discovering how composition creates balance, harmony and visual interest, and how influential artists continue to shape abstract art today.
Through a range of drawing, sculpture and printmaking experiences, students will experiment with form, pattern and structure to express their own interpretations of the world around them. As they explore the concepts of Change, Perspective and Form, they are growing as Thinkers and Communicators, confidently sharing their ideas through bold abstract expression.
We are looking forward to a dynamic and thought-provoking term in Visual Art filled with exploration, creativity and artistic experimentation.
Year 4

Where We Are in Place and Time
Central Idea
Histories and cultures inspire diverse artistic styles and traditions that shape artistic evolution.
This term in Visual Art, students are exploring how history and culture influence artistic traditions, with a focus on the rich and diverse art of India. They are investigating how modern Indian artists blend traditional techniques with contemporary themes, and how art plays an important role in festivals, rituals and everyday life.
Through pattern, colour, architecture and layered design, students will create artworks inspired by traditional Indian styles. As they explore the concepts of Connection and Change, they are developing as Reflective and Inquiring learners, considering how art evolves over time while honouring cultural heritage.
We look forward to a vibrant and inspiring term of creativity, cultural discovery and artistic exploration.
Year 5

Who We Are
Central Idea
Collage creates compositions that reflect individual identity, interests, and experiences.
This term in Visual Art, students are exploring how collage can be a powerful tool for self-expression and storytelling. They are investigating how artists use layering, composition, scale and proportion to communicate ideas, and how combining collage with other art forms opens new creative possibilities.
Through a range of creative explorations, students will experiment with texture, pattern, illustration and mixed media techniques, thoughtfully layering elements to build meaning within their work. As they consider the concepts of Form, Perspective and Composition, they are developing as Balanced learners and confident Communicators, making intentional design choices that reflect their individuality.

Year 6

How We Express Ourselves
Central Idea
Mythology captures narratives, cultural symbolism of traditions, and leadership qualities.
This term in Visual Arts, students are exploring how myths and legends communicate powerful cultural stories and symbols. They are investigating how mythological imagery reflects values, traditions and leadership qualities across different cultures, and how artists use symbolism to represent deeper meaning.
Through design, sculpture and printmaking processes, students will experiment with form, pattern and expressive detail to develop their own myth-inspired creations. They will consider how materials and techniques in mask-making can tell stories and how personal choices in symbolism shape individual interpretations.
As they explore the concepts of Form and Perspective, students are encouraged to be Open-minded and take creative risks, confidently interpreting cultural narratives through bold and imaginative artistic expression.
We look forward to an engaging and imaginative term as students bring mythology to life through their own creative vision.
