Physicsal Education Term 1 Overviews

PREP (FOUNDATION)

During Term 1, Prep students will begin with our Perceptual Motor Program (PMP), which focuseson developing confidence and coordination through structured movement play. Students will explore balancing, climbing, crawling, jumping, landing, throwing, catching and moving safelythrough obstacle courses. These activities support the development of fundamental movement skills and spatial awareness while helping children understand how to move safely in shared spaces. As the term progresses, students will begin focusing specifically on the fundamental movement skill of running. They will practise running in straight lines, changing direction, stopping safely and moving at different speeds through games and imaginative play. Throughout the term, students will learn to follow simple rules, take turns, share equipment and cooperatewith others. They will begin to recognise how their body feels during and after movement and understand why being active is important for their health and wellbeing.

YEAR 1

During Term 1, Year 1 students will focus on developing the fundamental movement skill of leaping. Students will learn how to take off from one foot and land safely on the opposite foot while maintaining balance and control. They will practise leaping for distance and height, linkingleaps together in simple movement sequences and applying the skill in games and obstacle courses. Activities will also reinforce previously learnt skills such as running, jumping, balancing and object control. Students will begin to choose appropriate movements to solve simple movement challenges and will explore how speed, space and body control affect their success. There will be a strong focus on fair play, following agreed rules and encouraging others. Students will continue building confidence and understanding how regular physical activity supports ahealthy and active lifestyle.

YEAR 2

During Term 1, Year 2 students will refine and master the fundamental movement skill of running. Students will focus on correct running technique including posture, arm drive, knee lift, stridelength and controlled stopping. They will explore running at different speeds, changing directionefficiently and applying running in relays, minor games and simple athletic-style challenges.Students will begin to refl ect on how they can improve their performance using feedback and observation. They will also explore how effort, space and timing infl uence running effi ciency. Through cooperative activities, students will develop skills in teamwork, rule creation and fair participation. They will describe how their body responds to physical activity and recognise the benefi ts of regular movement for fi tness and wellbeing.

YEAR 3

During Term 1, Year 3 students will begin their Athletics unit with a focus on High Jump, Shot Put and Discus. Students will practise and refine fundamental movement skills including jumping, running and throwing while learning safe and correct techniques for each event. In High Jump, students will develop safe take-off and landing skills using the scissor technique. In Shot Put, they will focus on the correct “push” action from a stable base. In Discus, students will learn a side-on stance, controlled rotation and safe release. Students will begin linking movement skills into simple sequences and applying movement concepts such as balance, force and space to improve performance. They will also learn how rules, safety procedures and respectful behaviour support fair participation. In Week 9, all Year 3 students will participate in the school Cross Country event, building endurance and resilience while learning pacing strategies for longer distance running.

YEAR 4

During Term 1, Year 4 students will continue developing their Athletics skills in High Jump, Shot Put and Discus with increased focus on refi ning technique and applying movement strategies. Students will build on previously learnt skills by demonstrating greater control of weight transfer, balance and coordinated movement patterns. In High Jump, they will refi ne their run-up rhythm and take-off timing. In Shot Put and Discus, they will focus on improving force production, body positioning and accuracy. Students will begin to analyse how movement concepts such as effort, space and timing affect distance and control. They will apply basic strategies to improve performance and refl ect on how regular participation supports fi tness and health. All Year 4 students will participate in the school Cross Country event in Week 9, where they will practise pacing, perseverance and positive encouragement of peers.

YEAR 5

During Term 1, Year 5 students will further refi ne and apply specialised Athletics techniques in High Jump, Shot Put and Discus. Students will demonstrate coordinated weight transfer and sequencing of movements to increase power and efficiency. In Discus, they will refi ne grip, body rotation and angle of release to improve accuracy and distance. In Shot Put, students will strengthen their power position and explore how controlled force and body alignment infl uence outcomes. In High Jump, students will refi ne their approach run, take-off angle and safe landing technique, building confidence at increased heights. Students will begin applying movement strategies to enhance performance and provide constructive peer feedback. They will also investigate how different training intensities affect the body. In Week 9, Year 5 students will participate in Cross Country, applying pacing strategies and demonstrating resilience and teamwork during longer distance running events.

YEAR 6

During Term 1, Year 6 students will consolidate and extend their Athletics skills by refining technique, transferring strategies and analysing performance in High Jump, Shot Put and Discus. Students will apply advanced movement concepts such as angle of release, force absorption, acceleration and timing to improve outcomes. In Shot Put, they will refi ne their power position and may explore introductory glide technique elements. In Discus, students will focus on controlled rotation, balance and effi cient release to maximise distance. In High Jump, students will refi ne run-up patterns, take-off timing and body positioning in fl ight, demonstrating increased consistency and confi dence. Students will analyse their own and others’ performance using agreed criteria and apply feedback to improve results. They will explore how physical activity intensity affects heart rate, breathing and endurance. In Week 9, Year 6 students will participate in Cross Country, applying strategic pacing, self-management and encouragement of others while completing the longer distance course.
