Year 7 Term 1 Overviews

English Year 7: Anmol Kochar
In Term 1 2026, Year 7 students will develop their reading, writing, language and speaking skills through a structured English program with a strong focus on NAPLAN preparation. Students will learn to read and respond to both persuasive and narrative texts by identifying key ideas, making inferences, analysing author purpose and understanding how language choices influence an audience. They will practise writing persuasively by forming clear opinions, using persuasive devices, and structuring texts effectively for different audiences and purposes, before applying creative techniques such as character development, narrative structure and imagery in narrative writing. Throughout the term, students will build their understanding of spelling, punctuation, grammar and sentence structure to improve clarity and accuracy in their writing. The term will conclude with an Oratory Competition, where students will plan, write and deliver a persuasive speech, developing confidence in formal speaking, audience engagement and effective communication.
Humanities Year 7: Vanessa Agar
For Unit 1 of Year 7 Humanities, we will be studying History, focusing on Medieval Europe. Over the course of the unit, we will answer the question: ‘How does learning about the past help us make better decisions about the future?’ Over the course of the unit, we will discuss a range of engaging topics, including Medieval punishments and whether Medieval justice was fair; Joan of Arc and the role of other significant people who shaped Medieval Europe; the feudal system and how it influenced Medieval Society, technological advancements during the Medieval period; the significance of religion to Medieval Europe and the Bubonic Plague. As we study this content, we will also adopt a position of comparison, comparing modern-day with Medieval Europe in order to explain changes and continuity. Students will be able to identify differences and similarities and observe how structures and practices in society have changed over time.
Math Year 7 :Roland Beszelzen
During Term 1, students strengthen their understanding of numbers by working confidently with natural numbers, integers, fractions, decimals, and percentages. They represent numbers in expanded form and as products of prime factors using index notation, and apply this knowledge to solve problems involving square numbers and square roots of perfect squares. Students also develop fluency with addition and subtraction of integers and use all four operations when working with fractions and decimals, selecting efficient mental and written strategies. They choose equivalent representations of rational numbers and percentages to support calculations and make reasonable estimates to check the accuracy of their results.
In statistics, students plan and conduct investigations using both discrete and continuous numerical data. They select appropriate data displays, interpret distributions by examining shape and summary statistics, and identify potential outliers. Students compare measures of central tendency and justify which measure is most suitable for a given data set, demonstrating an increased ability to reason, analyse, and communicate mathematical findings clearly.
Science Year 7: Nirmesha
In Term 1, Year 7 students will build strong foundations in scientific thinking, inquiry skills, and safe laboratory practice. Students will explore how scientific knowledge develops through evidence, investigate ethical and environmental considerations, and learn how to plan fair and reproducible experiments. A key focus will be developing practical skills, with students completing their Laboratory Licence and Bunsen Burner Licence to ensure confident and responsible participation in science lessons.
Later in the term, students will study biological classification, learning how scientists group organisms using shared characteristics and dichotomous keys. Students will participate in a BioBlitz incursion, investigating plant and animal species found within the school environment and applying their classification skills in a real-world context. Throughout the term, students will communicate findings using scientific language and digital tools while developing critical thinking and evidence-based reasoning skills.
Design and Technology
Year 7 Wood Technology: Din
Year 7 students will be introduced to safe practices in the wood technology workshop. Emphasis will be on developing good habits such as keeping the work area clean and tidy. Ensuring that each individual behaves responsibly in a safe manner. And most importantly to be consistent. Thus, the motto for students will be to keep it clean, keep it safe and keep it up.
Students will then be introduced to hand tools and how to use them correctly. Focus will be on safe habits and the emphasis on responsible behaviour in the wood technology workshop. This is followed by measuring, marking and cutting using hand tools. Students will then begin to build their own small wood work project which will allow them to practice basic woodworking skills in a safe and responsible manner.
Food Technology: Din
This term, the Year 7 students will begin by making cheese toasties, focusing on basic kitchen skills, safety, and hygiene. They will then progress to cooking a variety of dishes, including fried rice, creamy spinach and tomato pasta, brownies, chicken biryani, and cupcakes, allowing them to develop confidence in using different ingredients and techniques. Alongside practical cooking lessons, students will explore the design aspect of technology by selecting a country and creating a three-course meal. They will research traditional meals, their cultural significance, and how they have evolved over time in terms of preparation and presentation. Additionally, students will analyse food and fibre production, exploring ways to make them more sustainable. Through this combination of practical and theoretical learning, students will enhance their culinary skills while gaining a deeper understanding of global cuisines and sustainable food practices.
HAPE, Sport and PE
| Year 7 Health | Sarah | During term 1, students will explore the influences on our identity and how it is shaped throughout our lifespan. Students will then use their understanding of their identities to identify their aspirations and plan SMART goals to achieve them. Their Term 1 CAT will see students complete an identity portfolio comprising an About me profile, Timeline of life events so far, a family/important people tree, and a cultural overview. |
| Year 7 PE and Interschool Sport | Kevin Ngo | This term, Year 7 students are developing their athletics skills alongside preparation for interschool sport. In Athletics, they are refining technique and movement sequences through shot put, discus, 100m and 200m sprints, high jump, long jump and a 1.6 km run. Our first interschool sport is volleyball, followed by netball. By engaging in both units concurrently, students build connections between movement strategies and apply them across different events and game contexts. Students wishing to represent the school will need to sign up and attend try-outs during break times, and commit to scheduled training sessions to be considered for final team selection. |
Mandarin Year 7
This term, Year 7 students will explore the topic "My Family." Throughout the unit, students are learning how to introduce each member of their family by sharing details such as their name, age, favourite colour, favourite food, and hobbies in Mandarin. The focus is on building vocabulary, using sentence patterns, and developing speaking confidence. To showcase their learning, students will complete a final project where they can choose to either film a short video or create a paper booklet introducing their family members in Mandarin. This project allows students to apply their language skills in a personal and creative way while celebrating the people who are important to them.
