Year 5 Term 1 Overviews

Year 5 Term 1 Overview

Term 1 is a busy and exciting one in Year 5. Here is a short overview of what we will be focussing on.

English

Throughout Term 1 in English students will engage with a range of different types of texts for meaning. They will describe how texts convey feelings, mood, actions and ideas to build literal and inferred meanings. Students will identify the purpose, audience and author’s message of a variety of texts. They will explore how the sequence of still and moving images and sound within texts, create or affect meaning. Students will create written and spoken narrative and persuasive texts for specific purposes. They use text structures, including paragraphs, to create prominence and build sequence and cohesion. Students will select language for a specific purpose and use appropriate features of voice.

Numeracy

In Maths during Term 1 students will focus on understanding place value for whole and decimal numbers. They will interpret, compare and order numbers with more than 2 decimal places. Students will display an understanding of the connection of fractions and probability through experiments. They will work to understand equivalent fractions with common, mixed and improper fractions, and compare, order, add and subtract like/same denominators and place these onto numberlines.

SEL

SEL in Term 1 will focus on students treating others they way they want to be treated and

knowing that we all have different strengths that are valued. They will look at themselves as individuals and as part of a team, and identify the skills that help them work best (both individually and as a team). Students will learn how to be comfortable with making mistakes and understand that learning from our mistakes makes us stronger. They will also discover the importance of being kind to themselves and other in a variety of contexts.

They will look at influences and understand that they can be positive or negative. Students will learn about the impact of bias and stereotypes and that perspectives may be different between person to person. They will know the Importance of independent thinking and that beliefs and understandings can change as we learn and grow. Throughout the unit students will cover strategies to manage their own emotions and understand that health and wellbeing is influenced by relationships they have. They will come to have an understanding of what citizenship is and the rights and responsibilities that it entails. Students will focus on what ethics are and how they apply to daily life.

NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

It is a nationwide measure through which parents/carers, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine whether or not young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.

NAPLAN is made up of tests in the 4 areas (or ‘domains’) of:

  • reading
  • writing
  • conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
  • Numeracy.

In 2026 NAPLAN will run from Wednesday 11th - Monday 23rd march.
