Year -1/2 Unit

Year 1/2

What a great start we have had to Term 4 in the Year 1/2 classes. All the students have settled back in well and are excited for a jam-packed term full of learning, fun and events! We have welcomed two new teachers to the Year 1/2 team this term. Sarah Cassidy is joining 1/2T on Thursdays and Fridays and Daniel Gregory will be teaching in 1/2B on Wednesdays for the remainder of the school year.

The Year 1/2 students are diving into a range of exciting new topics this week and are enthusiastic to explore lots of new units throughout the term.

In Literacy, students have been introduced to procedural texts. They have analysed the structure and word choice within these texts and have made attempts at writing a procedural text.

In Mathematics, we have just finished a unit on Length and using informal units to measure various lengths, as well as distances between objects and landmarks. Students have worked independently and collaboratively to investigate how to measure length without using formal measuring tools or equipment. This has been a fun unit that has also allowed students to use estimation skills to predict various measurements. This week students will be introduced to our next unit on Fractions.

Students have been learning about various types of technology and are about to embark on our new unit focused on Digitech. This will give them the opportunity to explore digital tools and develop essential skills to navigate digital technologies. Last week, the Year 1/2 students were introduced to the Scratch Jr app, where they practised using basic coding skills to navigate and create within this character-building, animation platform. They enjoyed experimenting with simple commands to bring their characters to life through coding.

It’s shaping up to be a busy and productive term already, and we’re excited to see the incredible work and projects the students will produce. We’re off to a fantastic start, and the momentum is building!
