Year 5/6 - Senior Unit

Senior Unit Newsletter: Numeracy, Literacy, and Inquiry Update

Numeracy: BODMAS and Fractions/Decimals

In Numeracy, we’ve been focusing on essential mathematical concepts, particularly BODMAS (Brackets, Orders, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction) and the relationship between fractions and decimals. Students have been working hard to apply these concepts through a variety of engaging activities, including:

  • BODMAS Challenges: Solving complex equations that require careful application of the BODMAS rules.
  • Fractions and Decimals: Finding equivalent fractions and how they appear as decimals.

Literacy: Hybrid Texts on Extreme Weather

In Literacy, students are crafting hybrid texts that combine narrative storytelling with informative writing. This project centres around extreme weather events, allowing students to explore their creativity while developing informative skills.

  • Narrative Elements: Students are writing captivating stories featuring characters affected by extreme weather.
  • Informative Components: Alongside their narratives, they are including factual information about these weather events, such as causes, effects, and safety measures.

This dual approach not only enhances their writing skills but also deepens their understanding of the impacts of extreme weather.

Inquiry: Extreme Weather Projects

Our Inquiry projects are well underway! Students have selected three different extreme weather events to research and present. They can choose from various tasks, each with different mark allocations, allowing them to engage with the material in a way that suits their interests and strengths.

Some tasks include:

  • Creating informative posters or brochures.
  • Developing a song/rap that informs an audience on an event.
  • Creating a diorama that visually displays a weather event.

This project encourages independent research and critical thinking as students aim to teach their peers about the extreme weather events they’ve chosen.
