A message from the Principal

Staying SunSmart

As we move into September, it's time to turn our attention to staying SunSmart. Whilst the warmer weather has not yet arrived, it's important to start taking precautions to protect ourselves and our children from sun damage associated with higher UV levels.

At St Kilda Park Primary, we are committed to creating a safe and healthy environment for our students, which includes being proactive about sun safety.

Our SunSmart Policy outlines the measures we take to ensure our students are protected from harmful UV rays. You can review the full policy on our website here:

Starting Monday, 9th September, all students will be required to wear wide-brimmed hats while outdoors at school. This is in line with our commitment to keeping our students safe during outdoor activities. We also have sunscreen available in classrooms, but we ask that families apply sunscreen to their children each morning before school.

To help our students stay safe, we follow the 5 S’s of SunSmart:

  • Slip on a Shirt: Wear clothing that covers as much skin as possible. Long sleeves and collars are best.
  • Slop on Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to all exposed skin. Reapply every two hours when outdoors, and make sure to do this before school each morning.
  • Slap on a Hat: Wide-brimmed hats (at least 7.5cm brim) are essential for providing shade to the face, neck, and ears. From Monday, 9th September, all students will be required to wear wide-brimmed hats while outdoors at school.
  • Seek Shade: Whenever possible, stay in shaded areas, especially during the peak sun hours between 10am and 4pm.
  • Slide on Sunglasses: Wear sunglasses that meet the Australian Standard (AS/NZS 1067:2003) to protect the eyes from UV rays.

To help us with this, please ensure your child’s hat is ready for school: dig it out, make sure it is clearly named, and place it in their school bag. We appreciate your support in reinforcing these important sun safety measures.

Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us keep our students SunSmart!
