Unit 4, Personal Development Skills Class
As a part of the Unit 4 Personal Development Skills (PDS) subject the students identified homelessness as a community issue which they wanted to support, one of the year 12 classes banded together and created care packages (Tarneit Totes) to distribute to those experiencing homelessness with the support of the St Vincent De Paul Society. With hopes to provide a small gesture of comfort, the students produced 122 Tarneit Totes to serve as a reminder of the confronting statistics that for 122,000 Australian’s is a reality. Each pack contained a reusable shopping bag, bottled water, an Up & Go, muesli bar, bar of soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, wipes, hand warmers, a fruit cup and a mini packet of sultanas.
St Vincent De Paul also committed to placing a sandwich and piece of fruit to top up these packs, the students drove this idea through sourcing donations, requesting support from various companies, and determining what were appropriate items to include in the packs. The students assembled these care packages which were then donated to the St Vincent De Paul Society to be shared through the Vinnie’s Soup Vans. All students involved should be extremely proud of their enthusiastic and humbling efforts as their donations will no doubt support someone doing it tough.
