Astronomy Excursion
Year 10 Astronomy
This semester students have been investigating our solar system and the mysteries of our own Milky Way galaxy and the galaxies beyond our own. They investigated the proposed scientific theories of the beginning of time, the formation of elements and planets and the life cycle of stars. Students also investigated the advancement in technologies that allowed us to look deep into space and then the physics behind leaving the surface of the Earth to journey beyond. Students were fortunate to be able to visit the Scienceworks’ Planetarium to further develop their understanding of features of the universe including nebula and blackholes.

Student Testimonials:
On the scienceworks excursion there was a program on lightening and electricity, produced by Movement, metals and magnets. The Planetarium program on black holes
-Ruth
Going to Scienceworks for the first time was fun for me. We visited the Lightening Room which was something I didn’t expect. It had towers that shot out lightening. It was pretty cool to see. After that we went to explore and there were these little challenges everywhere that tested your body. The most fun was the Planetarium, kt was a big room filled with reclining chairs and a screen above in the shape of a dome. We learnt more about black holes and the universe. It was extremely fun to visit.
- KS
Something that I enjoyed was when our class went into the room and the chairs went back and when we looked up at a story about space.
-ZM
The thing I most enjoyed at Scienceworks was the Planetarium where we got to look at blackhomes in depth, and also the little activities related to physics. We also got information on electricity, where we learnt how electricity is conducted through the three M’s. Magnet, Metal and Movement.
-Vishwa
The Planetarium was very nice with all of it crazy stud about blackholes and the reclining chairs with narration. There was a lot of interesting effects and interesting moments.
-AH
The presentation about electricity and lightening was great, absolutely captivating – but the Planetarium was by far the best part, I don’t know where to begin with it. To put in a few words, the room set up itself was beyond fascinating, the highlight being the dome roof. The presentation projections were absolutely mesmerising.
-SEL
It was fun and educational experience that gave me a wider view of astronomy and science in general. My favorite part was the lightening exhibit.
-Te Rangi
Fun and educational experience sums up the Astronomy class!
-Danielle
I enjoyed the star show and learning about black holes and the history behind it. I also enjoyed all the fun activities in the planetarium. Watching the lightening travel has to be my favorite part, I could watch it over and over again. It was an exciting and relaxing experience.
-Mishva
I really enjoyed my time at Scienceworks including when the lightening made musical sounds (musical instruments generated the electrical connections so we saw sparks) and the Planetarium which we almost fell asleep (layback chairs) was very educational and enjoyable.
