Year 11 Visual Communications Excursion
The Year 11 Visual Communication students recently participated in a full-day walking excursion through Werribee to explore key elements of local art, branding, and environmental design. The day provided a hands-on opportunity to connect with their curriculum through real-world visual sources.
The excursion started with a visit to the Mooroop Yarkeen mural, a significant piece of public art created by Indigenous artist Tommy Day. The mural celebrates the Werribee River and its connection to the local Aboriginal heritage. Its intricate use of colour and symbolism offers a visual representation of the area’s flora, fauna, and waterways, giving students the chance to observe how cultural elements can be represented in art and design.
After visiting the mural, students settled along the Werribee River Trail to conduct observational sketching. This session allowed students to capture natural details and practice using line, texture, and shading techniques in an open-air environment.
Afterwards, lunch at Notorious Espresso provided an interactive look at branding in a business setting, alongside some much-needed iced coffees. The café’s style and iconography were reviewed as students observed elements of logo design, typography, and interior aesthetics. These will serve as great inspiration and first-hand research for future design projects focused on creating versatile brand identities.
The final part of the day included additional sketching along the river trail, focusing on natural textures and organic shapes found in the environment. The outing offered a well-rounded experience in integrating cultural art, branding, and environmental studies, providing valuable inspiration for the Year 11s' upcoming projects.
