Emerging Leaders Forum

Last week 10 of our Grade 6 student leaders participated in the Melbourne University Emerging Leaders Forum. The program is an initiative of the Victorian Department of Education and facilitated by Asia Education Foundation at the University of Melbourne.

The Emerging Leaders Forum is designed for Victorian students in Years 5 & 6, offering chances for them to connect and collaborate with peers from around the world. Students will explore intercultural communication, collaboration, and leadership. The aim of the program is to provide earlier level curriculum entry points for Victorian schools so they can embed global learning and engagement activities into their teaching and learning and student engagement initiatives. It also provides a learning pathway for engagement in the Junior Leaders Forum at Year 7 & 8 and the Global Youth Forum offered at the Year 9 level. Throughout the program students engage in a range of activities and regular breakout rooms in small groups with peers from a range of other schools and countries.

Through participating in the program, students will:

  • Understand personal leadership and teamwork strengths and learn how to use these to work well with others
  • Strengthen awareness of the geographical region and develop understanding of intercultural communication
  • Interact with different global perspectives, experiences and culture developing effective communication skills
  • Explore the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals, global citizenship and intercultural understanding.

During their session, students were introduced to Environmental Lawyer - Lily O'Neill who made connections to sustainability, energy, poverty, gender equality and how we as young leaders can try and make a positive impact for those around us. Our students will continue this investigation later this week and we cannot wait to see how we can begin applying their ideas and actions into our classroom spaces and into the community.
